So many decisions!!!!

I was gonna wait until I officially had a boat coming before i jumped into what to put in it, but thats no fun so I'll lay it out for you all to help me contemplate....

1) 496HO w/ XR
2) 525 w/ XR
3) 600SC w/ XR?
4) Ilmor 650 w/ TCM Plat.

or what else can you guys come up with? Obvisously money is a factor and a warrenty is important. Too Bad JC never gets on here, would love to hear his opinion... Maybe Rick can play the part or something ;) There lets see what you all can come up with?

Rob

Re: So many decisions!!!!

Rob your gonna get us all AMPED UP AGAIN !!!!! As for OUR JC he would more than likley tell you to go with a 496 HO. I do love the 600sci, but $$$$ The 525 is a smart choice, perhaps Mercs strongest mill out there. As for the last choice not enough info or dealer support. The big question here is HOW DEEP ARE YOUR POCKETS $$$$$$$$$$ Rob no matter how you go, i'm sure you threads will be loads of fun through out your winter build...................Gary

Well, I f you want big power, consider me your Giny Pig. I'm sure after they are finished with mine the next one will be a breeze. Isn't that the way it goes! By the way, I have a one year warranty with 801HP. The outdrive, we'll see about warranty. How good are my connections... Afterall the purchase agreement says I have 375HP. :D

FASTERDAMITT 08-22-2005 10:32 PM

Re: So many decisions!!!!

By the way I think my 801hp is about the same as a 525 from Merc.

Re: So many decisions!!!!

Good comments here already, it depends on what you plan to do - me, I opted for the base 496 Mag HO to get decent perfomrance for a year while I recouped cash and planned for repowering after the warranty runs out. If I hadn't planned to repower, I would have done the 525.

I've seen a best of 74.1 gps on my 496 - very respectable for a single over 30', and the 496 is proving to be a very solid base engine package. Whipple-ing on the 496 for about $10k can be done later to take the boat to the 80's, and the stock Bravo X drive can handle it, if you don't fly too much....

I like FASTER's approach - big cubic inches and no blowers (yet).....good luck! We'll be watching.....

Re: So many decisions!!!!

It's all about how much $$ you have to spend and how fast you want to go.
Like Gary said, JC will tell you the 496HO; It is the best deal from Merc. Those Black and Blue motors will put a hurting on your wallet...
I like the route that Tom went, however I think he went a bit overboard...
If you keep the boat light (without a full cabin) a 500HP will push the boat 77-78 and 600HP will get you 84-85... :D
I believe that there are many builders that can put together a reliable 550-600HP 540cube engine with a warrenty. And it will cost you a lot less then a Blue motor from Merc.
Good Luck!!! :drink:

Re: So many decisions!!!!

I would go with the 496 HO and the Raylar package.

Superbabi 08-23-2005 11:38 AM

Re: So many decisions!!!!

Rob, you never told us..........................HOW FAST DO YOU WANT TO GO ????????? Once we know the speed, than we know the HP. Just think KRAK-496 HO......SUPERBABI-600 SCI........OZ-525 HP...........FASTER-800 HP...............It's your turn, either you pick one of the above.?????? ..............OR REALLY GET CRAZY !!!!!!!!!............Rob if i were you i would be the 1st to use a #6 drive and a 1000 HP + :evilb:

Not a bad option if 525HP would make you happy...

However if you do the math a custom built engine may still cost less.
A 496 HO costs about 12K when purchased as a package with the drive. Like 14K when purchased separately. The kit from Raylar is about 5k if you don't opt for headers. Plus labor if you can not do the work yourself. So you are at 17K plus plus plus...
The Blue Merc 525 starts to look better.

Just as an example:
I know that 1-800-runs new sells 500HP/502 base engines for around 6K and 580HP/540 base engines for around 8K. You can complete one of these with all accessories and headers for under 15K. And you will have a warranty... :D

Re: So many decisions!!!!

Think how fast you want to go today. Add 12mph to it and that's what you'll be happy with for about two years. It's a proven fact. :drink: Pat, I wanted 650-700 when I started the project. Three months later I realized the rule and built the 800 now instead of wishing I had it next spring. :D And yes it only goes as fast as you make it. Nothing like having another quarter throttle you only use a couple times a year! :evilb:

Re: So many decisions!!!!

another option

5) Pfaff 600efi w/ imco xr

Talked to Paul himself today, got a ballpark price... 1yr warr.
and the shop is in SoCal... Damn this boat is costing more and more by the minute!!!

Anyone got any info on the new "baby 6" drive merc is suppose to have out for '06? I keep telling the wife that the boat wont go "that fast" and i'll keep it tame... LOL

Oh and i have to rule out the #6 with the 1000hp... Even with my insurance agent being my cousin, I couldnt get that one insured for anything reasonable if at all.

Superbabi 08-24-2005 01:20 PM

Re: So many decisions!!!!

By all means option # 5 is a great idea !!! Any of the national brands like Pfaff---ZUL---Sterling are perhaps great choices !!!

FASTERDAMITT 08-24-2005 04:37 PM

Re: So many decisions!!!!

Pfaff's pricing is almost inline with the Merc blue motors. Shop around before you buy. I would'nt pay for a name. Perfromance and value talk.

Superbabi 08-24-2005 05:17 PM

Re: So many decisions!!!!

Rob what speeds are you looking for ???? The new mini 6 is still hush from what i gather. Remember the Merc 600sci will make 750 hp after all is said and done !!!! Also I think it's a good idea to have SUPERBOAT do a TURNKEY PACKAGE. Any issues can be taken care of there. :D

Re: So many decisions!!!!

Ahh the million dollar question; How fast do i wanna go???

Honestly I really dont know... I think about how much I'm looking at spending and the 496 looks better and better. Then I think well, we are gonna do some poker runs and since theres next to no SB's out here, i have to make this thing a show piece so bigger will be better. Or do i save some money right now, take the nice long warranty and be content? Ok go with that plan but upgrade the drive, steering, etc... so its ready for a big hp motor. But if i go through all that trouble and money involved, then why not just have the motor in it now and be done? And then theres the Idea of maybe racing (yeah, and I think this boat is gonna cost alot LOL) so build the boat to race trim and then only add what can be taken out later. Since the F-1 rules seems to be in flux then what motor do i get for that application? I have a feeling that after i get a chance to ride in the Y2K I'll have a better idea as to how fast i want to go in one... Been to 140mph in a Nortech and that seemed slow, then I have been in 21' shiada (sp?) at 110 and that scared the **** out of me.

So I'm really having trouble right now figuring out how fast I really wanna go? I thought I would start this thread with the idea that you all would have words of wisdom for me being Y2K owners. So lets hear some WISDOM!!!!!!

And if that doesnt happen then atleast I'm entertaining you all with my endless BS ;)

Re: So many decisions!!!!

Oh and to follow up those statements... I wanted a 30Y2K because they have a great reputation, will haul ass no matter whats in them, and how cool is it to pull up to twin screw and smoke them with a single!!!

Re: So many decisions!!!!

So Huntington, did you make a deposit?

Pat McPherson 08-24-2005 07:44 PM

Re: So many decisions!!!!

Superboats are not the fastest boats around. But you will not find a boat of the same size that will handle the rough better... :D
I have owned my 24' Super for 3 years now and many have been amazed how she runs in the rough. I have gone past boats 4-5ft longer, some twins too, in big water without question. Rough water is where these boats shine... :D
I have not gotten to ride in a 30' Super yet, but I'm quite sure it's more of the same on a bigger scale... :evilb:
Yesterday, I spoke with OH-Zone, a proud new owner of a 30' at length. I believe Gary made all the right decisions when putting his package together...
It has been well documented that the 30' Y2K has a vary efficient hull to about 80mph. To push one well above 80 is going to take a lot of power and the $$ will climb exponentially...
The 496HO is a great package for the budget minded. However, this boat handles so well in all kinds of water, I believe you will want more power sooner than later.
In my opinion the Merc 525EFI is too expensive when compared to a custom build 600+HP engine. But a vary good case can be made when you consider a complete warrantied package (engine, drive, gimble, steering...) installed at the factory... :drink:

FASTERDAMITT 08-24-2005 08:20 PM

Re: So many decisions!!!!

I agree. But how many other boats are faster with singles that are actually 30'? Two?

HuntingtonBeach 08-24-2005 08:22 PM

Re: So many decisions!!!!

Faster... I'm wating till Sept. for the deposit, don't see a reason to send the money in. I would rather do it face to face. Are you coming out to Huntington Friday? I'll be around for most the day... First round is on me!!!

Pat... I agree that Sb's might not be the fastest boats but have you seen some of the tanks they are making on the West Coast nowadays? 6000lbs for a 28' thats not much of a performance boat when you get something weighing that much. I also think you hit the nail on the head: if not a 496ho then which is a better deal, Merc. or anyone else? Oh and JC and crew are rigging this beauty no matter what goes in it... I can't buy a boat 3000miles away and pray it runs when it gets here... We'll run the **** out of it before it leaves NY!!!!!!

Hey Rick, if your paying attention... Have you guys tried some of the newer composites or techniques to get the hulls weighing less then now? I might be the guinee pig if your interested?

Several weeks ago I was the 4th overall to the first stop at the Little Creek Poker Run, many twins with much bigger power way behind me. this Run started in the Chesapeake Bay then Runs into the Ocean down Virginia Beach to Rudee Inlet, quite impressive.
