The maintenance of a 24 single and a 30 single should be near nothing.
A bit more fuel... just a bit. That 30 should be very efficient.
Dock space??? I had to keep my 24 at a 30ft slip... so no more $ there, for me. Winter storage... another $150?
Otherwise if both are single screw, then not much else.

But I hear ya about 1st timer, trailering, and finding a spot at the local watering hole.
But you'd probably recoup better resale on the 30.

Storm,
I do agree with your earlier statement that from the manufacturing side building 30' boats may be better/more cost effective. I would guess that a 30' hull costs Superboat less than 5k more than a 24' hull to produce.
I do not agree that the costs of buying and owning a 24' vs 30' are similar though.
Let's compare the power required to push the two boats at similar speeds:
A 24' Super will run 65+mph with a 300HP/5.7L small block and nearly 70mph with the 320/6.2L small block. If you go to big block power the 24 runs 75+mph with the 375HP/8.1L and nearly 80mph with the 425HP/8.1L.
The 30' Super requires big block power to run the same as a 24' with small block power. And if you want to crack 75mph it will require one of those high $$ Blue engines or a custom built mill. The cost of an out-drive that can handle big power doubles as well...
The $$ for purchasing power, $$ for fuel, and $$ for maintenance are not even close to equal...
Now if you were to compare a 24' rigged with a 425HP, XR drive, full hydraulic steering, and all the other whistles and bells to a stripped down 30' with a 425HP, the costs would be more similar...

I didn't say anything about having the boats run the same speeds.

And if I upgraded to a 28 pantera... where would the extra costs come from. so I'd use 35% more fuel??? I only used about $1000 worth this year. Just curious, not looking to bust balls.
Now... a 1990 35 cafe racer would be an entirely different story.

BTW... what does SB charge for a 24 w/ 525 loaded? w/ full Hydro steering? compared to a 30?

I think the upcharge for a the 4ft on a pantera would be $25k.

Storm, the season is over for us so why not debate this subject a little more?
So you want to compare an 80mph 24' to a 70mph 30' boat?
That sounds a bit backward to me...

I guess the definition of significant $$ difference is different for each of us...

Hey Storm, I'm sorry that it would appear that you only logged in the neighborhood of 25 hours on your boat this year...
Lucky for me, I logged 75-80 which is considered about average for us in the north country...
Using your 35% more fuel theory, that would equate to more like $1000 different.

I'm not sure as to the pricing of a 24' hull vs. 30' hull but I would guess that they are no more than 10K apart...

A few years back I priced new 24' Supers and just last year I priced a new 30'.
JC would not rig a 24' with a HP500 a couple years ago so I don't think a HP525 is an option now. A vary basic 24' with a 300HP small block will cost around 45K and a fully loaded one with a 425HP big block, full hydraulic, k-planes, and... would cost about 60K I would guess.
A basic 30' Superboat with a 425HP/496HO will cost around 60K and loaded up with a HP525, XR drive, full hydraulic, and... will cost 100K+...
I my world, $15,000 to $40,000 is a BIG difference...

OK... lets derail this thread and keep it going.

I only logged 43hrs this summer.
In this mad mad mad mad mad mad mad world of boating... $1000 for fuel should not be much of a factor.

But I'll tell you one thing, I'd rather be in a 30ft w/ a top of 70, than a 24ft w/ a top of 80.
Its alot easier to ad HP, than to throw on 6 extra feet!

I don't run wide open much, and the cruise would be a bit less on the 30, but the ride would be another world, which is what is important to me . Which may not be for others.

And be happy w/ 80hrs this season, because with more kids in the scene, that number will get lower!
Also once I put mine on the market, I kinda stopped using it.
1. because god forbid something happens to it.
2. I felt like I had already broken up w/ her.

BTW... the boat is sold.

I had a good year . 13hrs for the Zuperboat this year. Only put gas in twice ! The supercharger is looking better every minute.

Pat and Storm,
The $ difference between the Y2K and a 24 is only a few k, 3 or 4, 5 tops.
The Y2K is "VERY" economical to drive with the 496HO. Ask Keith (Once Bitten), and it does 74mph. As for maintainance between the two. They are about the same.
Here is a quote from Keith of Once Bitten, or otherwise known as Krakmeup

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My new 2005 SB Y2K
Air temp 66, winds 5-10mph
Fuel 1/4
Two people
Stock 496 Mag HO, 4 blade bravo prop
5000 rpm

GPS 74.1

Oh yeah, fueled up again,
210 miles, 81 gal = 2.6 mpg

Real data, real boat, smiling all the way......

Keith

People with alot of boating experience would pick the 30 over the 24. When I first bought my 24 I thought it was huge coming from a hydrostream. Those are the people we need to hook. To some a 24 or now the new 26 would be perfect. On the island alot of people dont have room or the knowhow for a 30 on a trailer. Just my 2 cents
