JC told Gary that he would do the Whipple installation. They are not coming from Mercury that way.

That would be one Sweeeeeet package :)

Re: Twin Whippled Smallblock Y2K

So what would be the best twin small block power for a Y2K?
I guess, as usual, it all comes down to how fast you want to go and how much $$ you can afford to spend...
A 300HP/350MagMPI Bravo package is pretty reasonable at like 12K. The boat should run in the high 70s maybe touch 80mph.
The 320HP/6.2 Bravo dive is 4K more at 16K but I believe the engine is built a bit more stout. And we know the boat runs low 80s for a top speed.
The nice thing with the stock Merc. engines is the warranty options...
Whipple kits for either are 6K each. If you feel the need, 2-3K for the X or XR drive upgrade. The superchargers should push the boat 20mph faster...
Now who's going to warranty the package? Not Merc... Superboat? Not likely...
Now can you get an engine builder to build a 500HP EFI small block N/A or Whipple charged with a 2 year warranty? And have them build it complete with all accessories for 12-13K? Probably not; I'm guessing more like 20K complete...
I'm starting to ramble now...  :drink:

Pat,
World products has the 454 SB. Puts out 575 HP with cast iron heads, and 600HP with aluminum heads. And it naturally aspirated. Heres a quote from them.

"The small 454s sell for $9,995 with iron heads or $10,495 aluminum, and both are covered by a two-year or 24,000-mile insurance policy that covers them for up to $4,000 in repairs. But 24,000 miles? Yup--they run on 91 octane and they're designed and built to drive forever"

I think this would be the ultimate setup !!! And the cost is reasonable too !!

Re: Twin Whippled Smallblock Y2K

I think aluminum heads and aluminum exhaust would go along way to help lighten the azz of a twin engine Y2K.
I'm thinking the cams that come stock in those engines should be changed to something a bit more mild and marine friendly. The carbs are too big and not CG approved so something has to change there as well.
They do look like a great base engine to start with though... :drink:

Pat,
Look at the dyno test sheet. Motor look great. Most auto motors don't make hp at those rpm's. The cam might be just fine. As for the carb.......Put a flame arrestor on it. $29.95 ;)

Well Rick,
One thing is for sure, with a pair of those in a Y2K it would be realy fast. Maybe even Lightspeed... :drink:

Pat at this point I really believe the best path is as you said, let JCPERF build a pair of small blocks ( SUPER TOUGH ) say at 350-400 hp each, than the small block whipples. Keep the HP. with the whipples at 600 each, for the XR drive.

Re: Twin Whippled Smallblock Y2K

Boy it's fun to talk about spending other people's money... :D

Gary, I believe that if you want a 500-600HP small block that will not have to spin 6500rpm to make the power and have a reasonable idle for handling around docks, supercharging is the way to go.
The Whipple EFI setup is modern technology and a great way to go...
Whipple has calibrated packages for the Merc 350mag and 6.2L engines. To build a custom engine with a Whipple EFI system may become quite an R&D project... :evilb:
Maybe a call to Dustin at Whipple is in order???
