Boating License ???

Jersey just started a mandatory State license for all boaters that will take place over the next few years. 1st year the youngest, next year another age group, until all groupes have the license. What is your State deal ????

Re: Boating License ???

To ride a sea-doo no matter what age you need a license. If you are over 14 you do not need a license to drive a boat alone. The mininim age to get one is ten.

Re: Boating License ???

No license rule yet, but we soarly need it. Peopleout here drive boats way too fast with little or no experience. Hence the reason insurance is so high. Age 16 is the cutoff for anything with more then 10hp.

N.J.was like that for years ( as long as I could remember ) Time to fill Bureaucrats pockets with license fees.

Re: Boating License ???

Funny how you have to be a licensed captain to drive a yacht but no restrictions to pilot a missle (since most of these boats are )?

Re: Boating License ???

NH started the same "boater ed" program a few years back, I'm 40 and I was due this year so I took the test on line last month. its so easy if you don't pass the first try you really have no right being near the water. To be honest it was long over due, it'll cut down on the fright of wondering if the guy coming at you has a clue.

Re: Boating License ???

No license needed in MD. You have to be 16 to ride PWC and I think boats included.

Re: Boating License ???

What gets me pizzed off is those damn JET SKI RENTALS, a 5 min. prep. course by some KID, and those URBAN COWBOYS are off and running. Mean while PWC onwers have to take a course to get a license for ther use.

Re: Boating License ???

CT has had a boating license requirement for over 10 years now.
For a PWC license you used to have to take an additional course, but I believe they have been combined.
I think it is a great thing...

You're making me feel old! :p
I took the Coast Guard Auxiliary boating course at age 12 to get my boating license. Back then, 27+ years ago, you needed a license under the age of 16.
My first boat, a 9' Zodiac with a 6HP Evinrude. Now that is 10 boats ago... :D

Gary, I'm not a huge fan of PWC either. I have gotten the urge to run a few of them down...
But just like other boaters, some respectful and responsible and some not... :drink:

Rentals suck no matter boat or PWC... they cause more accidents then anything else @ havasu... not only is everyone drunk but now you have a drunk with no clue about boats and operation. I would be the first to stand up and vote for licensing for operators!!!

Re: Boating License ???

Guys I grew up with the stand up JET SKIS a long time ago. Marcy and I have a pair of them, ( sit downs ) and we do enjoy them at times ( very hot days ) but the growth of the PWC has grown quite large ( cheap, easy on gas, big bang for the buck ) but they are very dangerous out on the bay, they never run parallel to you, always out of no where darting across your bow, almost KILLED 2 of last year ( by Accident ) and thats the private owned ones, THE RENTALS ARE WORSE

WE a a HUGE tour boat up here (the waves flipped the Ethan Allen you probably heard it on the news) and some guy on a rental hit it. Its not like you cant see a 145 foot boat!

Blow boats? Anythnig that floats that can't travel in a straight line from point to point is what I call DRIFTWOOD.

LOL, actually all boaters that are responsible are ok by me, but its still fun to poke fun and laugh at yourselves whenever you can....and BTW, any "sailboat" without sails up and under power has the same rights and constraints as any other POWERBOAT.

Let me not forget, Kayak's, peddle boats, and rowboats...........oh yea swimmers.

TeamSaris 02-11-2006 04:33 PM

Re: Boating License ???

Kayaks are the worst because they are almost always environmental freaks. I had the hatch up one time and one paddels up and says "You should not dump that oil in my water." and i said "dude this is my boat that doesnt have any leaks. Now go away I am changing my plugs." then when i was done I did a 55 mph blow by jus to piss him off. It was soooooo much fun.

Re: Boating License ???

The PWC guys are all getting the blame for bad actions of a few bad ones, but there are some real jerks in regular boats also. I am not a fan of guys who cut in front of me or try to jump my wake when im crusin. last year i was goin in the bay and outa my side view a ski came up and almost T-boned me we stoped yelled for a few seconds, his girl gave us the finger and then a wake hit them and she got drenched!!! we got the last laugh, but it wouldn't have been to pretty if they broadsided us    A liscence wont stop stupiditybbut they might learn something in a classroom!!! tripps

man 10 boats I have go some work to do....although my 24 Superboat is everything that I could really want for right now(Y2K would be nice though ;) )
Here is my first...and number 1 and 2 at the dock.

I agree with Tripps, there are always going to be stupid people but at least educating can help somewhat.

In MD if you were born after july 1, 1972 you are required to take a 9 hour boaters safety course put on by the us power squadron. Then you take a test. I took the test when i was 9 and missed 1 question, it is really really simple. As far as rentals go, there is a loophole which allows the rental company to issue a 10 question test that the renter must get 100% correct on, and they will be issued a tempory boaters safety certificate for I think 3 days. But there is no limit on how many times in a row the renter can take that same test. i.e., everyone passes. When I was in high school I worked at a boat and jetski rental outfit in Annapolis, and let me tell you these people have no business on the water. We were allowed to refuse service to anyone we deemed unsafe, but usually they put on their best behavior until you release them out of the boat slip. I remember a couple of rabbi's who took a bunch of kids out on two 19' four winns horizons and totalled both boats by running into each other. Luckily no one was hurt, but it goes to show you that intent is no substitute for experience.

Thanks. I appreciated the input on the y2k last year. It just didn't fit into the budget when I started doing some remodeling on my house. The superboat forum has always been one of my favorites to visit because there is very little bickering and a lot of knowledgable people. Who knows, maybe in a few years....
