twin outboard Y2K FAST!!

Has there been any twin OB Y2K's. Just wondering about speed #'s and handling characteristics. Thanks!

Re: twin outboard Y2K FAST!!

Yes, but just one.
Not a lot of info on it though; it was before FX-10 and OSO.
Gary (Superbabi) has ridden in the sister-ship to the Zuperboat, a twin outboard powered Tempest with a Y2K hull.
Comments G?

ff2 here we go, a very nice ride. But from my view point and the limited time on the boat ( 3-4 hours ) the single BB is a nicer rough water boat. A couple of shots !!!

Re: twin outboard Y2K FAST!!

I used to hang out with the Guy who owns the Y2K with the outboard in College. Have not seen or heard from him in a while. If anyone talks to him tell him to pm me or call. He was a member here but was always a lurker. Not sure if he still is a member though?

Anyway the boat was pretty fast. And it accelerated like a bastard

Hey - what about that all black SB I spotted here in Texas, twins or triple outboards, someone here knew about it being in my area - who's got the scoop on that one? If I ever see it again I'll chase him down and get some photos......

Re: twin outboard Y2K FAST!!

There were alot of twin Tempests, and a few tripples (The original Extractor) out there, literally hundreds.

I TO AM VERY INTERESTED IN A NEW Y2K WITH TWIN 2.5 SS ROS MOTORS. I HAD A 1989 30 SUPERBOAT BACK IN THE MID 90'S WITH TWIN V8'S. I THINK IT WAS SET UP AS A RACE BOAT, IT HAD A THREE MAN STAND UP BOLSTER SEAT AND A FRONT BOW GAS TANK AND TRANSFER PUMPS TO MOVE FUEL FROM THE FRONT TO THE BACK TANK. SER# SBY10227D989. I BOUGHT THE NEW 2.5's FROM OCEAN OUTBOARDS A MONTH AGO FOR A SKATER DEAL THAT NEVER WENT THUR. NOW I HAVE THESE MOTORS AND NO BOAT TO PUT THEM ON. I WAS WOUNDERING IF YOU GUYS EVER USE CARBON FIBER/ KEVLAR LAYUPS. MY NEW FAMILY BOAT IS A FULL CARBON/ KEVLAR LAYUP AND I WOULD LIKE TO SEE IF YOU GUYS AT SUPERBOAT COULD LAYUP A LITE WEIGHT Y2K WITH FULL CORE FOR THE BULKHEADS AND STRINGERS AND THE KEVLAR/CARBON TO SAVE WEIGHT. THANKS FOR ANY INPUT. BRYAN

Now this would be an intresting build !!!!! :D

Re: twin outboard Y2K FAST!!

23elim,
Our Y2K's are pretty lite to begin with. We have layed up hulls with Kevlar before, but there is really no weight savings. Carbon fiber is another story. $$$. We have a light weight lay up already that is race proven.

23elim;
Welcome to our world!
What kind of speeds with the v8's

23elim 03-22-2006 06:33 PM

Re: twin outboard Y2K FAST!!

Boat ran all across the board. No fuel in bow tank light on fuel in rear tank with the k-planes up and motors that where bulit by baker marine it would run in the upper 80's , with stock v8's it ran 78-80. i think that the best day it would run almost 90 on the speedo. I would think that the new bottom would be faster and the boat could be bulit lighter. I really like the new look and I think that if it is built ultra light and with the new 2.5 280's it should run around 90mph. But I might be all wet and it may only go in the low 80's . If I can get some of my old pic's down loaded I will post some pic's of my old red and white superboat. Does superboat keep info on all the boats that they built in the past, I would like to know how much my old boats weight. Thank you for the kind welcome.

Re: twin outboard Y2K FAST!!

What year was the hull ??

Pat McPherson 03-22-2006 07:32 PM

Re: twin outboard Y2K FAST!!

There is an older (late 80s maybe early 90s) red and white Tempest with twin 300x here in the CT river.
The engines are mounted on the transom, no setback.
I have heard the boat runs in the high 90s...

Re: twin outboard Y2K FAST!!

Freeze Frame had a pair of Bridgeports I think, and he was hitting 93. He has stock 250's now and does a sodid 80 all day.

There was a 30 Tempest for sale last year in CT. Red with white parimeter stripe(I believe) for sale could that have been yours? It had a couple of Mercs on it in the for sale pic. Where are you from?

Re: twin outboard Y2K FAST!!

How Fast Do You Think A Y2k Would Go With A Pair Of 280's. Do You Think That 90+ Is A Real # Or That Just A Dream?? How Light Is The Std Light Layup ?? Would The Hull, Interior, Rigged With Outboards Be Under 3200 Pounds Or Is That Way Off. To Answer Your Other Question I Live In Washington State And The Old Boat Is Still In Our Town. Thanks Bryan

HuntingtonBeach 03-23-2006 08:47 PM

Re: twin outboard Y2K FAST!!

With those motors you might hit 90 but thats with top speed props... weight wise I would guess your still pushing closer to 4000#

The 30 is big enough you could go triples???

Re: Y2K / Outboard

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Curious!?!.....Would the outboard(s) be bracket or transom mounted? Also, can the cockpit be lengthened (shortening what would be the eng compartment) with the outboard(s)??...........Jason

I FOUND THIS QUESTION FROM A FEW MONTHS AGO CAN ANYONE ANSWER IT.

FX10 03-24-2006 04:27 AM

Re: twin outboard Y2K FAST!!

The outboard version of the Y2K has a motor well, The cockpit is the same in both versions. There is no swim platform on the outboard version,
The 30' Tempest Freeze Frame had a 3' Gil setback on a full transom. I'm sure that could be done under the swim platform.

Re: twin outboard Y2K FAST!!

I bought a 24' at Sport Boat Sales back in '99. At that time one of the sales people was a young guy, maybe in his early 20's. He had dark hair and told me John was building him a Y2k with twin outboards. I spoke to him once afterwards, when I came across the boat for sale in some publication, don't remember where. I called him and he said the boat was doing low 80's with twin 300's. I never spoke to him again. I alwaysw wanted to see a pic of how the transom looked and a profile shot. Im cursing myself for not having asked for a pic.
