Hey Jaykawk,
Masher is just jealous that your engine will be good for 400-500 hours and he'll be luck to get 40-50...:p |

Like I said before, Dave M. and T-island are running B1 props and reaching speeds in the high 70s with the same hull. With the older straight V hull, 3 blades work OK for high speed, but on the newer stepped, pad hull, I suggest 4 blade props... |
We were up at LOTO for the OSS races this weekend. She ran great, but we still have some work to do.
The bad: Brad said when we picked it up on Friday that he'd forgotten to do anything about the stock oil cooler and that I'd need to keep high rpm runs to a minimum to keep the oil from getting too hot. It would get hot pretty quick just by looking at the pressure. We did do some runs, but kept it to a minimum. We have an RPM problem also. I was unable to get above 4900 rpm. There could be one of a few reasons for this. First, my trim gauge was not working, so I may not have had it trimmed up enough. I did try to look back and see how much "tail" I was putting out, and it looked like it I was trimmed pretty good. If not the trim, Brad was thinking that the stock pickup in the fuel tank may be too restrictive and I may be running out of fuel at the big end. It is interesting to note that the old engine would not rise above this rpm either. The last reason may be that the tach is simply off. The prop is definitely too small. I had to feather it out of the hole to keep it from blowing out. Punching it from 3K, you could feel the slip. The right prop is going to make a BIG difference. The computer has to go back to Tyler. We are still real fat at idle. I have to open the throttle to get it running when it's cold as the plugs got pretty fouled. The idle is about 100 rpm low also. He said no problem to fixing those issue up. My transom is now black. You'd think I was running a holley! We blew a header gasket and had to listen to TICK TICK TICK on Sunday! The Good: The thing runs like a monster. Hitting the stick at 3K throws you back like being in a hot rod. Pure hard acceleration! I'm nervous to see what it does when the prop bites properly. We ran the GPS on Saturday, but didn't hammer it real hard. We saw about 65 on a quick short run. The GPS batteries died on Sunday morning once we were out, and I didn't get a chance to replace them. I did make a couple of more sustained runs, and from the feel of it know we were well above 70. Once this thing is dialed, it is going to be a heck of ride! The boat is back at Brad's shop for the oil cooler and to check out the rpm problem and trim gauge problem. We probably looking at about 2 weeks for him to finish it up and get it back. There won't be much time for prop testing left this season. I'm on the list at BBlades for testing a 25P Rev 4, but I think it is going to be too small. I think I need to start with a 26P B1 and go up from there. Right now, I think I got my money's worth for sure. Once we get the rest of the bugs worked out, it is going to be a bit on the crazy side for that little boat! |
Jay,
I struggled with an RPM problem a couple of years ago and tried everything. As you mentioned it turned out to be the TACH. What ticked me off was it was so simple to check and the last thing that came to mind. That would be the first thing I would check..... |
Sounds like you're getting there...
A 25p Rev 4 and 26p B1 are about the same pitch; B1s are stamped on the high side. On my boat, both the 25p Rev 4 and 26p B1 touch the limiter (5150) at just shy of 75mph. T-Mone ran 80 @ 55-5600 with the 25p Rev and 78 @ 53-5400 with my labbed 27/28p B1. I think Dave M. said 78mph @ 5000 with a stock 28p B1 on his boat. You should be above 80mph if you can spin a 28p B1 at 5200rpm. Have fun and be safe... |
I say stop trying to polish that turd, scrap the project and buy a horse

I don't no if this helps I was getting 83.2gps at 5900 to 6000 with a b1 26 prop 2'' shortie drive, my buddys 79SB 24 with a 25p mirage at 5500 was 74gps thats a trs ,I was trying to talk him into a sm3, or bravo he has about 550hp so it looks like he losing 6mph. oh the imco shortie 2'' drive made my boat handle better, fly flat it should help you non step guys I would think. well good luck, I HOPE TO MOVE UP TO A y2k, or 28 joker next year.

2005: 5500-5600rpm 74-75mph spinning 23mir+
2007: 5800rpm 77-78mph, same prop. |

so how you feel about the mir+ vs b1 vs Rev4??

All in there stock form I liked the feel of the Rev 4 best, but I would need a 27p. Since I had BBlades modify my 28p B1, the prop works great in all conditions and the speed is just as good as a stock 3 blade. My newly labbed 27p M+ pushes the boat real fast and I'll use it in the Fall when I stay in the river on calm water. |

I might have to up the ante of my boat! :D I think I'm getting bored of my power. I'm cruising around at 4000+ rpms all the time. |

Are you saying you're going for more power in your 24' Super or buying a bigger and faster boat??? Dave, I've been running with the 502Mag in my boat for 3 seasons now. I have just about everything to convert it to a 500HP. It's just that she is just running too well to mess with... |

I don't really want to spend any more $$ on my boat. Hmmmm, I'm seeing more used Y2Ks on the market......:cool-smiley-027: |

Dave your so right about the used Y's hitting the market. Just when I was gonna put up Superbabi For Sale.
The same 3 are still here on OSO. 2 of those are out of my league and the other has been painted and left in the water. |

Yup, I agree for the most part.
Above 70 in the rough gets a little nutty. If I had a set of those thick sit down racing bolster, I'd probably push her a little harder though. I stand in the rough at this point, I'm short enough... On calm water, my boat handles great even at 75mph and if she had more, I'd use it...:D Pat, when I first got my Pantera I couldn't get comfortable sitting because it was kind of a half sitting/half standing. And I did not like standing in the rough. The cockpit isn't deep enough for me to be comfortable standing. I ended up lowering the bolster bottoms of my seats 3" or 4"(I can't remember off the top off my head) and now it's much more comfortable. The bolsters now wrap around you higher and give you a much more secure feeling. |

Lowering the seat bottoms is a vary good idea, infact Zuperboat did the exact same thing to the stand/sit seats in his 30' Superboat. The problem with doing that in my 24' Super is then the bottoms will hit the floor if I do want to swing them away and ride standing. T-mone is going to have a new set of PPIs install in his boat when he brings his boat to FLA for the winter. I'm going to check those out next spring. I'm also going to take a good look at Superbash's boat when he comes to CT in a few weeks. Superbash has the sit down setup from Superboat in his 24'. One other thing I have to consider is my throttle location. If I sit much lower, I may not be able to reach it without moving that too. We'll see what happens next year; no cash to change anything right now anyhow... |

I hear you on the seats hitting the floor but after I did the mod I NEVER rode standing up again. In fact I took mine one step further this year and made them permanent sit downs. I looked at converting mine like T-mones and it would have been a lot of work as my whole dash would have to be modified. I don't know how your bolsters are set up but if you ever want pics of what I did let me know. |

Hey Jayhawk,
Anything new with your project? |
Nothing new yet. We should be picking it up tomorrow to go run it again assuming T.C. has sent the computer back for us to have today.
We upgraded the oil cooler, and the fuel system from the tank to the engine. Hopefully that will solve the rpm problem. Header gasket has been replaced with a better piece. Hopefully tomorrow we'll get her out and run and see what she does. I will probably wait for spring to prop test as we're running out of time this year. She's going to be winterized in about 2 weeks. |

I've got a ø14.5" x 28p 4 blade Mach I could send you next week to try. It was a little too big for my boat but still ran OK. 75mph at 4700rpm with vary neutral lift. Have Fun! |
I'll try anything you're willing to send my way Pat! I've talked with Brett about their prop testing program. I've also sent a PM to Throttle Up asking about their program which has been summarily ignored.
I'll PM you about that prop. Thanks Pat! Us engineers have to stick together ya know. If you want or need to try a 25P Mirage Plus labbed by BBlades, you're more than welcome to it. |

No thanks on the 25p M+, I've got a 27p that runs real well. I have not ever tested a prop from BBlades or Throttle up. It has always been easier for me to find a fellow boater willing to let me try theirs. If you do have a Merc prop and need it repaired or altered, BBlades is the place to go. |
