OK, 5 blade is here!!!

I'm a firm believer that 5 blades are the real "bravo buster", but I'm throwing caution to the wind!! Just got a Hydromotive P5X. Hopefully it will help to "loosen" the boat. Spoke with Todd at Hydromotive and I feel he knows his stuff. We'll see!!!

Wish me luck!!

Nice Kendal!! We got some CNC'd five blades for the cat this year too!!

z.zuperboat 04-11-2010 05:56 AM

A five blade mite improve everything but top end. But you never know until you try. I use to keep a log on prop testing with air temp wind condition speed every 500rpm and trim always at its favorite spot. Your boat with 800hp should be low to mid 90,s .

K, I think you will pick up some speed with the 5 blade, my Y2K with the 600 sci ran at its best the Merc, 5 blade Max. And also with the Potter 800 a five blade Merc. 5 blade gets us the best top end numbers. Best of luck I must have tried at least 5 props with each motor to find the best perfomer. Keep us posted.

boating37 04-11-2010 10:26 AM

What size Hydromotive P5X did you get? I have a 29 pitch.Dave @ MGD says the boat ran the best with this prop all around.

Pure Energy 04-11-2010 11:51 AM

I got a 28 left hand. I've heard the same about the p5x working for the y2k. I find Superbabi's results interesting.

boating37 04-11-2010 06:38 PM

I will have to look into that. I need a second prop so maybe I will try the merc 5 blade.

I have a 28 right hand maximus for sale. I cannot spin right because it leans and rolls too much. I tried it once but don't remember any other specifics.

I think it would be to small, I'm pushing a 29 5 blade now.

Pure Energy 05-13-2010 01:45 PM

Tested the prop today.

3500..................54
4000..................60
4500..................70
5000..................75 and climbing
5600..................84

The prop definately gave more overall lift and made the boat alot more loose. I am happy with the cruise numbers but dissapointed in the top end. Was hoping for a couple more mph. Needed less trim to optimize speed, 3 1/2 compared to 4 1/2 on the guage. Still need more time to really analyze numbers but prop felt good. Water was calm, and a light load.

noli 05-13-2010 01:55 PM

crusing all day at 55 aint bad :)

Superbabi 05-13-2010 02:03 PM

K, How much HP is your motor making ???

I was thinking more like 70 all day!!!:coolcowboy:

Gary, 775hp

Pure Energy 05-13-2010 02:30 PM

I will add that it still felt like the boat was "dragging" through the water.

Superbabi 05-13-2010 03:16 PM

K, I think the correct prop will get you 88-91 mph. The best we head with with the 600 was 83 mph. The 800 will get 92-94 mph. These numbers are on the best of days, nice 2' plus chop.

Pat McPherson 05-14-2010 08:36 AM

Hi PE,
It sounds like the slip number is a little hi.
You should top out 88-90mph at 5600rpm running a 28p 5blade.
I road with JCap years ago and with the exact same power and prop, his boat ran 88 with 5 people in it. He ran a 1-1/2" spacer I believe before adding on to the lifting strakes. If you do a search on some of his threads from back in the day, like 2003-2005, you find his setup.

Pure Energy 05-14-2010 10:39 AM

Hey Pat!! I took off the 1 1/2" spacer I had on it because the handling suffered. The boat really felt stuck to the water, kind of like the bottom was covered with barnacles!! I also switched to an Imco lower. Boat handled and felt better, but no speed gain. I may try the spacer again, but I'm getting tired of chasing speed numbers. 84 is very fast and certainly fun!!

Pat McPherson 05-14-2010 11:39 AM

Hey K,
When are we ging to meet up in Greenport?
My boat should be ready to go and at the marina by the end of this weekend.

z.zuperboat 05-15-2010 05:46 AM

Hi Chris,
Yes, I did have my boat for sale last Fall. No, not getting out of boating. Just looking to down size. We'll see how this season goes.
Chris you need to make a big slide hammer out of a piece of threaded rod. Try to get a big washer and nut inboard of the bearing and have at it.
Sorry to reply on your thread K.
Chris shoot me a PM or give a call if you need more.
Patrick
