Expensive lesson learned!!!!

Had a great day yestarday, boat ran great. On the way home the motor locked up at over 4000 rpm. The threaded rod holding the flame arrester down came loose bounced into the carb, fell into the blower and locked it up tight!! We took the belt off and made it home.

Why is this a lesson? Because the rod had come loose in the past and I failed to secure it properly!!! I never imagined it could fall in, well I was wrong!!!!

I'll take pics as I tear it down

Ouch!!

Thanks for sharing the lesson!

Can you also share the rebuild process?

Pics would be nice...lots of pics :)

Will you be just rebuilding the current hardware or will you take this opportunity to upgrade the components ?

No idea what to do, too many options. I think I need to start with rebuilding the whipple, if possible, pulling the heads and checking to see if metal got in the cylinders, etc etc etc. Going to be a pain staking endevour!!!

ndaniels 06-20-2010 02:34 PM

Yikes!

Sorry to hear about it... hope the motor is fine

Superbabi 06-20-2010 06:14 PM

That sucks, right at the start of Summer. Hey K perhaps a good time during rebuild to Add a few more HP.

THEJOKER 06-20-2010 06:21 PM

Dang that really blows. Hate to see this thread.

Ted G 06-20-2010 07:07 PM

Looks like the intercooler should have caught most of the debris, you may just have to get the blower and you'll be fine.

noli 06-20-2010 08:03 PM

is there a way to get a vacuum hose thru the spark plug hole and suck up the interior of the cylinder to see if there are any debris...so that the cylinders heads won't need to be removed?

GEORGE YURICK 06-21-2010 06:26 AM

that really sux.....i have seen that happen on stock mercruisers before.....i always locktite those silly studs when i am in there.......

keep us posted....

Stormrider 06-21-2010 10:43 AM

K, sorry to hear about that. :(

Pat McPherson 06-21-2010 11:34 AM

That's a total bummer!
How will the engine run without the blower?
Can you just bolt on an intake and carb to get back out on the water?
I think I remember when you built the engine originally, it didn't have a blower, right?

Airpacker 06-21-2010 11:43 AM

that blows in a big way. May I suggest the following modification to stop anything like that from ever happening.

Remove the stud and toss it in the garbage. Get a stainless BOLT to replace it with. Bolts with a washer can only ever fall OUT, not in.

Either that or get a Nylock nut for the top of the cleaner instead of a standard but...they dont wiggle them selfs loose :D

noli 06-25-2010 05:14 PM

What's the latest on this rebuild?

Superbabi 07-15-2010 03:22 PM

K, whats going on with the motor ??

Pure Energy 07-15-2010 05:50 PM

Pulled the innercooler and intake. Pulled the plugs and took a look at the cylinders with a bore scope. All looks good!! Just waiting for the new compressor. That reminds me.....time to make a call!

Superbabi 07-15-2010 07:17 PM

that is awesome boating waters out there.

Back in 2000 I used to launch my 24 superboat out of Port of Egypt. The marina was a Grady White Dealer. We would go thru Gardiner's Bay to get to Block Island! Cool!

Superbabi 07-18-2010 07:09 AM

k, Thats trouble free boating, with a beautiful location. :grinser010:

Hey K,
We visited Greenport yesterday.
My buddy and I hung at Claudio's, listened to the band, and tilted a couple while our wives took the kids to the carousel. Then we had a nice dinner and people watched. Lots of great boats, bikes, and cars to look at among other things.
What a fun town…

Pure Energy 07-19-2010 09:03 PM

Yea, I saw you!! I sit on my deck and watch the boats go by. I think I saw you around 4:00 ish coming around Bug Light???
