24 SUPERBOAT questions/ resto

Hi first post. i purchased a 80 24' sb about three months ago and have been under going a restore on it. i replaced the floors, sanded, primed, and painted every thing above the rub rail. now in to the point of rigging and setting up the power and have some questions. Im in the middle of building a 496 with 990 heads, roller cam/ rocker, 454mag fuel injection (for easy tuning i know they arn't the best flowing intakes) and an intercooled m1 procharger and cmi header with dry pipes. the boat originally had a sternpowr mx7 on it that im replacing with a trs with a nose cone due to condition and parts availibility. im also installing k-plane 280s

My first question is has any one used a standoff box on a 24 sb i would like to build one like the konrad ace so i can install the tran inside of it and move the motor back to clear the procharger.

and secondly i need to know a good drive height for these boats id like to get as much speed as i can with what i have and when/ if i build the standoff i could move it up as much as id like

i know most people would ask why im not installing a bravo but im building this boat out of parts i have and on a very tight budget

thank you guys for any help

JC once told me that he thought the TRS 24's ran the best because of balance and center of gravity.

I have to say that my '98 24 w/bravo ran great too. Having a bravo setup might help when you decide to sell the boat.

The efi intake will free up some height over a carb setup, so you will have lots of room to raise the motor, I'd think. Nobody that I know of has installed a standoff box on a 24..

My 454 MAG MPI barely cleared the hatch. The highest point was part of the fuel system toward the back of the motor. There small cut out section on the top of the hatch on my 24. Then. when I put a 496HO in there is was still very close. I had to cut a small section of coring out of the back seat part of the hatch to clear the flame arrestor.

yeah I haven't been able to find and 24x7 boats with standoff boxes do u guy think I would kill the handling with one?

And one of the down falls of my boat is it's missing it hatch so i'l be making one to fit where ever the engine ends up

Dave, yours was a step hull, right? Thats the only reason I can think of the motor being that close to the hatch.. on the straight bottom I had an inch above the flame arrestor on my carb motor and I always figured my carb motor was taller than the 502mag thats in the 21??

With a standoff box, I'd think it would improve the speeds, but who knows? The only negative would be possibly making the boat a bit more nose happy in the rough than what it was before... you're running big tabs though, so I'd think it could work for ya.

i'l get pics up after work today, I have to wet sand it one more time and spray a final coat on it, then it's time for interior I'm getting the floor rhino lined and I have sit downs for it, from what I red no one ever seam to flip their bolsters down and my org. Ones where in pretty bad shape.

I have a couple of weeks to decide on standoff or not my 990 heads will be back from the machine shop hopefully Thursday and I can start doing the engine asym.

But yeah the reasone I bought the big tabs are to go with a standoff and I hope it work well I have the bow all drawn up on rhino 3d just need to seen the file to the machine shop to have the pieces cut.

What kinda speeds are u guys getting with around 600hp on the straight bottom boats?

Could be, either that or the drive height may be a little higher, thus raising the motor.

Probably a combination of both, I bet. I'd really like to see a step bottom side by side with mine to compare them.

Are you sure you want to rhino line the floor? I'd think it will add quite a bit of weight to it. I'm not sure about speeds with 600hp on the straight bottom.. guessing it'll be in the high 70s to low 80s.

We're almost done with my motor and it should be around 650hp. Its an old straight bottom with a bravo setup.
