How Fast Is Your Superboat ???

OK Guys,
No BS...
How fast do your boats go?

I was fortunate to get out on the water twice this week to let her rip.

The water on the CT river was like glass both days. No wind to speak of, and mean low tide (no current).
2 people, 3/4 tank of fuel, and normal gear (cooler with an 18 pack on ice)

Here are the numbers for my 1997 24' with her 310HP/7.4MPI

26p Bravo I prop: 69mph (speedo), 64.8mph (gps) at 4500rpm

25p Mirage + prop: 71mph (speedo), 66.2mph (gps) at 4600rpm

Not too bad...

I have seen 1-2mph more in a 1-2ft chop and out in the salt water.

Next year with a few off season mods. I am hoping to see 70+mph on my GPS.

Happy Boating,

:)

Dave M 10-09-2003 08:55 PM

Faster then Yours! :D

When are you gonna build that engine!

Here's my stats

98 24' 454 Mag MPI 385 HP.

All speeds GPS....

Best speed ever, 75.3, 25" Mirage Plus, 5200 RPM

2nd best 74.8, 26" Bravo 1

I think my motor may be getting tired, I think the best I've hit this season has been 72.6.

6" - 1" water will always net my best speeds. Glass like water doesn't allow max RPMS for me.

Pat McPherson 10-09-2003 09:08 PM

Hey Dave,

I talk to Glen at the machine shop yesterday. My heads are on the bench being bowel ported.
I plan to pull my engine some time this fall and put it on the engine stand in my basement.
The plan is to change the heads, cam, exhaust, and reprogram the ECU.

How about you?
Are you going to build a 500hp?
If you are, add another piston to your external steering.

My best speed ever was 67.6mph (gps).
I did see 72.4 on my gps once, but when I put the boat in neutral, the gps was still reading 6+mph. We can have a hell of a current in the river if it has rained a lot, and the tide is going out.

Dave M 10-10-2003 07:00 AM

I'm in the process of deciding what I want to to. I'm kicking around the idea of selling her and getting something bigger. I don't want to put out any $$ if I'm going to sell. If I keep her I wil go to FULL hydraulic steering over the winter in preparation for more power.

My wish list right now is .....

30' Superboat
29 Kryptonite
28 Pantera (single)
Activator
Phantom

I want something that will be fast without crazy power. I'm happy with a bare bones type boat too. I don't need all the ammenities. The '24 is actually big enough for the waters that I frequent. But a few more feet would make those rough days a little more comfortable.

Pat McPherson 10-10-2003 09:06 AM

Dave, I like your list for a potential next boat!

A F1 type single engine will be my next as well...
Not in the cards just yet, but my wife named our boat "For Now" for a reason.

I think the hunt for the next can be as much fun as owning the one you have.

Good luck!
Keep us posted, I love to BS about bigger and faster...

Hey Guys,
Just had the bottom bluprinted this past winter ,it helped. Im still not happy with the numbers,
34p bravo four blade(labbed down to 33), 5800rpms,89.90 on gps ,with a good chop to air it out,87.5 on flat water. 509 with a small blower about 650 hp.I dropped a valve at cambridge and destroyed a piston and a head , scored the cylinder pretty bad and waiting to hear if it is sleeveable, Im not sure if I will rebuild or replace .Hey Tripps ,still got a big block in your basement?
Jim Capie

tripps 10-10-2003 09:00 PM

Hmm. also,i wont be at the HT run unless if it's sunday:( :( :( Tripps

fastedy 10-11-2003 07:24 AM

80.9 is the most I have seen with the 500 efi, 83.5 with the VORTECH before we put the sportmaster lower on.
Jim what #'s were you looking for 89, 90 sounds abought right to me, srry to here about your engine, what was the problem with your drive?

Eddie

Pat McPherson 10-11-2003 08:06 AM

Hey Jcap and Tripps,

I met up with some guys from Babylon, NY at The Giants vs. Dolphins game last week, small world...

Sorry to here about your engine Jim, good thing the season is just about over. Will you go for more HP when you rebuild? The high 80's sounds pretty fast to me.

Fastedy, Did the new drive slow you down?

zzzzzz 10-14-2003 09:52 AM

Pat, Could I pic your brain about Superboat vs Pantera (24) I live in Wallingford, Ct and noticed you are a big Superboat fan. My number is 860-565-1779 (work) or if you would prefer I could call you. Thanks, Tom

Columbus Day Ride

I'm happy to report that I ended my cruising on the sound with a cloudless Columbus Day trip to Block Island for lunch on . The seas were choppy but the boat handled them so well (50mph) that when I got home I could only think how great a ride the 24' is in those seas. The Island was pleasantly quiet but the stores and restaurants were still open. I think I saw one boat moored in Great Salt. What a day!! Now I will keep my cruising to the Ct. River. Pat, are we ever going to hook up?

rtaylor 10-14-2003 01:25 PM

Don't have it anymore, but got 73 (gps) on my 1998 24' with a 300 promax and 26" prop (forget rpm's).

Pat McPherson 10-14-2003 09:17 PM

Hey zzzzzz,
I sent you an e-mail. Give me a call or e-mail me, I love to talk boats...

Hey JMK,
I also took yesterday off. Did a bunch of chores around the house, then went for a blast at 2:30.
You are an animal, BI and back...
I just went out to Bell 8 and back, it was a beautiful day.
I would like to hook up with you before the ice forms. I'm out for the coming weekend though, wedding Saturday, cutting fire wood on Sunday.
Monday or Tuesday after 4:00pm might work for me.
Drop me a line if a week night could work for you.

zzzzzz 10-15-2003 07:11 AM

Patrick, I'll call you tonight. Thanks

1994 , 24' twin 2.5 200 hp carburated 75 mph.

Pat McPherson 10-26-2003 07:20 AM

Well, The Hoser has the fastest...
93+ in a 21', that is pretty sick!

Seems like I have the only that won't go at least 70...
I'll have to fix that this off season. ;)

There is a 30' here in the CT river with twin 300x outboards. I would think that boat would run near 90 too. Anyone know who it is? The boat looks like the big brother to Gassticks...

sb30 10-28-2003 07:02 AM

Pat,

I have seen that red and white 30 with the twin 300x's also cruising the river from time to time, do not know who it belongs too though.

z.zuperboat 11-05-2003 10:00 PM

HEY PAT WOULD YOU BE INTERESTED IN A SET OF MERLIN HEADS/DART INTAKE/950 HOLLEY AND A NICE MERC 575 CAMSHAFT AND PUSH RODS. THIS WILL GIVE YOU ANOTHER 125 PONIES

Pat McPherson 11-07-2003 07:43 PM

Hey Zuperboat,
Congratulations to you, your wife, and daughter. Hoping for a boy this time? As long as everyone is healthy!
My wife has been trying to soften me up for another one too. I am going to try to hold her off until after next Summer. We'll see, I may crack yet...
I have most of the parts for my engine upgrade already, but thanks for the offer.
Talk to ya :)

I'm off to Key West today to watch the World Offshore races. Anyone planning on being down there? -- I will post some shots when I get back.

Dave M 11-14-2003 07:34 AM

Hopefully I will be riding in my boat at some point this weekend making believe I am racing in the worlds! :D

It's supposed to be around 60 degrees this weekend.

Have fun in KW.

Dave M.

JackL 11-16-2003 04:57 PM

Hey Gassticks
I just moved to Fla and my brother in law is going to work for seaboard sec. Is that the firm you worked at ? How are things going ? If you get down to south Fla give me a call 516 313 4557 cell.
Jack

JMK4060 11-25-2003 04:38 PM

Key West

The Worlds were a total blast and if you have never gone I suggest that you experience yourself. I even learned that this year's races were not attended by as many boats as prior years. I have some great pictures I will post over the holiday weekend and I have regretfully report that the new Pentera race boat looked awesome and ran great. What an experience to see one of the Supercats flip right in front of you. Helicopters do ad to the drama. I hope all of you had a cheaper winterizing bill then I just received!
