Ready for the nut house......

I'm looking for some input/feedback as far as dialing in this 30 ft load thats in my drive way. Without getting too long winded I fooled myself into a false sense of rigging confidence when I tangled with putting twin 200's on a 24. Initially the 30 started out life with a single big block in it.(back in 1982) I bought the hull with no power and put a bracket on with 3 200's. It seemed to go ok spinning 26 choppers at 7700 rpm with little to no trim.
One of the motors popped so being on the budget at the time I dropped the center motor out and just ran a pair. The boat spun the 26's at 6600 with an indicated 76 on a cheap teleflex speedo. The hull carried nicely trimmed good and felt really light and nimble with this odd looking set up.(remember at this point I was still running the outboard motors w/a 40 inch tie bar).
It was at this point things started to go sadly wrong. The third spring I had the boat I decided that the"76" was pretty reasonable for a 30 and I'd down rig to the twins. The motors came off and I redrilled for a 21" centers with the twins. The hydraulics were re-run and all the rigging was changed around. The first trip out was miserable. The motors would only spin 5900 and the speedo indicated 61.(at this time I had no gps).
Various motor heights were tried to no avail. Rotations were swapped back and forth along with the motor heights.....The only thing that changed the top end was swapping to cleavers. It seemed as though with the 20" lowers wouldn't carry the boat adequately. It was almost like the props would cavitate or blow out with any trim applied.
I switched to 25" lower at the suggestion of a marine guy up here who had helped rig a couple 30 o/bs. The 25's seemed to held a little with the props deep. They ended up running 64.1 (gps) with choppers and 67.1 with cleavers. At that point after several phone calls to J.C. (always very vauge and ending with a "don't waste your time, just buy a new 30 y2k") I decide to lengthen the lower lift strakes with add ons (read not permenantly (sp?) attached.) Obviously I achieved quite a bit of stern lift with no real top end speed increase although the choppers could be used again.
The boat got mothballed for two years while I worked on the house.
This spring I hung a pair of 91 offshore bridgeports on it. While the motors were off I redrilled the centers to 24" Thinking that the spread might carry the hull better. The boat only got run 5 times before I ran out of season, gps best was 73.4 at slack tide. Both motors are very healthy spinning up 7100 rpms.I'm still running the 26 choppers with the lift strake extensions. I'm going to shorten them as off shore it won't carry the bow like it did before.
Was I wrong to expect more out of this set-up? I was thinking It should be pushing low 80's ......I don't know.
I've never weighed the hull.It has foam bulkheads in it and the deck's balsa cored. The bottom up forward has balsa core but down at the stern it's all glass. I'm at wits end with this thing.... It just look's too fast to go this slow.
After talking with an old racer up here he said the only guy that could answer my questions was a guy that worked for john in the early to mid 80's when Jeff Giradi worked there too. All the guy knew was that he was a postman..... Any input? criticism happily accepted at this point too........     Stick4406 P.S. the 24 ran an indicated 83 on a keller speedo. At speed it was a one handed driver....

See if you can get a hold of the guys that ran Freezeframe. I think Freezeframevideo.net is their web-page. Check the thread below for a picture of their boat.
Also, there is a Superboat dealer in Lynn, Mass right near GE that I saw a 30' twin outboard race boat at a few years back. They may be able to help... It might be the same Freezeframe guys???

Hey if you ever want to sell that hull, I would be interested in a project turning her back into an I/O...

stick4406 11-25-2003 07:04 PM

30......

Pat, I talked to Jeff Giradi about his. He said that when they laid his hull up they put a 3/4" step about 6 feet up from the transom. He said it made the hull substantially faster than the standard full hull.
The boat in Lynn was owned by Tim Horgan (formerly stoneham boat center) He had a couple 30's that he had rigged but both hulls were the step set up. That hull was a trick light hull but it was a 3 man boat, it had a bulkhead put in behind the bolsters with with a glass cockpit hatch. Superlite lay-up too. Tim said it would run 89 w/ 260 efi's.
As far as selling, the option may be open...it was originally built w/a 482 chev w/ a 8/71 blower on it. Thanks for the reply, I feel like I crashed the board w/no introductions..... Doug Stickney

tripps 11-25-2003 07:51 PM

Hi stick, that is some story,i run tripps on a 30 velocity, don't get upset superboat fans,i like them also, have had some also. All i know is that middle motoa helps me out alot,it goes about 70,but the boat probally weighs 1,000 to 2,ooo lbs moe than yours. next year i'll have to take off the middle lowerunit and try it out. what is your question? why did it do that? going slower with twins close together, sorry i don't know,oh yerh welcome to the board. If you go into the posts from last year wou'll see alot of stuff about superfest, pics ,and other stuff, maybe a pic of my broken rod that peconic posted good luck tripps

Hey stick4406,

Welcome to the board. It's good to see more Superboat owners online. I'd like to help but I know nothing about OB's.

Yo Tripps,

What's going on? I talked to Mike about his boat last week. Do you think you can get over there sometime and take some good picks of it? Cockpit, engine compart., rigging, etc?

Hi sticks4406,
I would also like to welcome you to the board Doug. Got any photos you can post?
To be honest, I think 73+ with twin 200s sounds pretty good for a 30ft.
Gassticks has twin 200s on a 24ft, and is only a few mph faster.
There is a 30' Tempest with twin 300s running around here in the CT river, but I have not met him yet. That boat is also a true O/B model (no bracket). I do know that it is real fast...
There are not a lot of 30 Tempest out there that were built for a single I/O, so I would vary be interested in your hull if she becomes available some day.

Hey Dave,
Good luck with getting pictures out of those Babylon guys. Tripps and ZZ are always complaining about their cameras. Maybe Peconic will go visit and take some shots. Just joking E....

Tripps,
Did you put her up for the winter yet?
My engine is coming out on Sunday. More HP needed!

Talk to you all later...

stick4406 11-30-2003 07:52 AM

new to the board....

I thought it was pretty cool to see a superboat forum. The way I see it is the superboats are just a no b.s. performance v bottom with no fluff. Mines empty down below and I have no intentions on overnites etc... (I suppose in a pinch a sleeping bag and a cushion would work) One of my fishing boat buddies calls it a sea skiff.
Tripps, I think that 30 velocity hull is one slick hull, was it originally an in board? Dave and Pat, its great to be chillin with s-boat guys. I'm sure you feel the same way about the s-boats as I do, because you have them too.
I figure the other guy's are trying to figure out what color stripes to put on their sun pads or how to get the plush cockpit carpet installed for the winter projects. I really miss the 24. It was an easy boat to make go fast and the perfect size for trailering and handling around tight mooring areas or busy days at the beach. The extra 6 feet on the 30 pays off when your off shore but for a bay runner I'd prefer the 24. I'd be willing to bet that gassticks could pick up about 5 mph with a little set back. The bobs transom jacks worked great on my 24. For some reason I can't access the pictures, Is that one of the options for a paying member?? stick......

Dave M 11-30-2003 11:06 AM

Hey stick4406,

Ya, if you don't pay you can't see the pictures. I spend a lot of time on here so it's worth the $20 to me. There are not many Superboats down here where I live. This is the best (only?) place to get info from others. Not many people down here ever heard of Superboat. There to busy worrying about their porcelon crappers and transom showers! LOL I get the "who makes Superboat" question all the time.

Your 24

Dave, I snuck onto your website... thats a sweet looking 24. I haven't seen that many inboards.Everything around here is rigged with o/b's. stick..............

Pat McPherson 12-02-2003 11:31 AM

Hey stick4406,
Dave does have about the nicest 24 around. He has been my consultant as I make up grades to mine...
We want to see a few shots of yours. How about it?

Dutrasystem 12-03-2003 06:21 AM

welcome

Welcome to the board stick (doug)... This board is very useful for ugrade tips and various other ways to spend $$ . I had/have a 24 up for sale however, It looks like I might be keeping her after all. Maybe Santa will be good to me this year. Heres a link to my website. I have a 2000 step bottom 454 mag mpi w/CMIs she runs and runs with little to no problems since I picked her up.. Good luck

stick4406 12-04-2003 08:59 PM

Sean, good to see another superboat guy around. Your 24 is a sweetheart too. What kind of horsepower can you throw at those? Seems like it would be real cool sportin a 540 with a mild blower on it???? hey, it's only money right??
I'm still waiting for Pat's pics... I'm going to have to scan some of mine. This last summer, everytime it left the dock it was a test run to try a different set-upso instead of camera's and cool-pops it was note books and the gps.
I'll have to get my membership straight so I can check out some of the pics in the board... stick

Pat McPherson 12-05-2003 11:29 AM

Hey stick,
Pay the $20, my boat is all over this Forum...
I don't have a web-sight, I get picked on enough for being a computer geek... :D
A 24' with a 540 would be something! They will reach 85mph with 500HP and the right prop.
