24 with 550hp
Does anyone have a 24 w/ around 550hp(or more) with a bravo drive?
I know guys blow Bravo 1s up w/ big HP in the big heavy boats. How does it hold up, if not beaten and abused, in the smaller, lighter boat. |
Re: 24 with 550hp
The fact that the boat is light will definitly help. The air time would offset that benifit. :D

Re: 24 with 550hp
you will be fine, just hold on :D

Re: 24 with 550hp
Keep the prop in the water and it will last years. I ran, I think 150hrs or more with 600HP on an 97 Bravo1 drive.

Re: 24 with 550hp
Hey Storm,
Most say the Bravo 1 is good for 500HP and the Bravo XR 600HP... Horsepower is a calculated number not a measured value. Torque is what really matters... Given the fact that you are going to run a naturally aspirated 468cube, your engine will not make the same kind of torque a 540cube will. So, one would think the drive will handle it... The previous owner of my boat had a 500+HP/502 in her running in the mid 80s. The drive was fine until I hit a log last year... In the end, it will be up to how you drive... If you have the extra $$, buy that XR upper you were talking about, or buy a spare Bravo 1; they can be had for about $1500 this time of year. Good insurance; we only get so many nice weekends up here in the north land... :drink: |
Re: 24 with 550hp
Usage time is my concern. I'd hate to have down time, but I don't have $$ to burn, and I don't want to keep putting more and more $ into the boat, knowing that its getting to much for a 24.
I'm not one to beat on my boat, so I think I'd be OK. If I beat on an XR I'm sure I could break that too. I think I'll check the drive oil and see if its clean. If it is, the drive is probably in good condition. I'll make my decision then. How much more confidence can I run the boat in, w/ an XR? $2500-3000 worth more??? I think I'll need to sleep on this one a bit more. Thanks for the help guys. Oh, and its only bored out 30over, so its a 461cu in. :D On another thought, maybe i should wait till the engine is dynoed to know what i'm f'n with here. :evilb: |

Re: 24 with 550hp
Since Storm boats on the LI SOUND...I don't see keeping the prop in the water as an option  . I know I couldn't...& I know Pat couldn't. & what fun would it be then anyway??? :)
-This may be intersing this year. Pats "lighter" 24 SUPERBOAT vs. Storms "heavier" Pantera -SUPERBOAT VS. PANTERA???? ...sounds like a good new thread!!!!! :D |
Re: 24 with 550hp
Hey Bash and Storm,
I'm always up for a challange... :evilb: June 11th Mattituck to Old Saybrook... :drink: I know my prop is going to come out of the water... I had both my 1989 24' Pantera and my 1997 24' Super on the scale at the local gravel pit. My super is only 150-200lbs lighter... Storm's going to have 550HP but I'm going to have 550Lbs of torque... :D |

But you will after I dyno. I don't need to race... or come all the way up to northern CT to burn my fuel. But I will post my gps #s w/o a doubt. Plus I'm not one to race... I could fly Jo up for the competition. I'm not trying to be the fastest. I was going to rebuild to stock, but there was not much of a $ difference to go to more HP. I was not going w/a stock exhaust again, so I could go more HP. But now that thats done, I'm faced w/ the drive issue. That's all. I'm looking forward to cruising 55-60 w/ no prob. :D I'd definitely be up for a SB run, not trying to beat you, but just run w/ you. I had a blast running w/ Dutra last summer and it was only for 10 minutes. |

It'd be easier for me to trailer out to an east end run. As far as the drive goes, maybe just the upper will give me what I need. and as far as $$, there are plenty of cards giving me 2.99% for life. :D |
Re: 24 with 550hp
Hey Storm,
L.I. is Superboat Land... FLA. is where the Panteras are... :D There is also a fellow that has a 24' Pantera in Old saybrook/Deep River. Ron (525) put me in touch with him but we did not hook up last year. I think he is Vitamin C here on OSO... Trailer to Mattituck with the South Shore Crew June 11th. It's going to be a great run!!!!!!!!!!!! :drink: |
Re: 24 with 550hp
Torque is definetly the bravo slayer!
What prop you think you will be turning? the higher pitch props need more torque and in turn stress out gears and shafts, regular bravos arent happy spinning anything in the 27 pitch and higher range and they also dont like spinning lefty props ( i know some pantera guys feel thier boats like left hand props, I run a lefty on a 30y2k) Just my 2 cents, I am not a drive expert, I am just really good at blowing them up! Jim |
Re: 24 with 550hp
I'm being told my torque will be around 520-530.
I was hoping to spin a 26 or 27 B1 or M+. I'd rather pay now for an XR than have my wife watch me blow drive after drive. :( Pat, I put 6-11-05 on my OUTLOOK. See if I can escape from the family for a day. :D It's probably more fun than a poker run. |
Re: 24 with 550hp
Check it out Storm...
http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/s...ad.php?t=94142 I have both a 26p and a 28p BI, so we'll see which works better. If I was to guess, the 26p will put her near the 5200rpm rev limit and the 28p will max out at 4800... :D Not going to use a 3 blade anymore. Storm, If you can spin a 26p or 27p at your planned 55-5600rpm, you are going to be flying... :D Hey Jcap, How are your doing? Any plans for a drive change on your boat? |
Re: 24 with 550hp
Pat, not sure on those prop #s.
Gonna have to play w/ it. 6/11-12 looks like fun, but if i can get away, it'll be the 11th only. I'll try to keep an eye on the threads. Jeff, just cleaned up my new dart heads... he says the look great. "Maybe another 20-30hp right there." OYE... what i get myself into!!!! |
Re: 24 with 550hp
I hear you man; leaving the wife with three kids for more than a day is a tough one...
My heads are also at the machine shop for a little bowl port and blend... :D |
