Great Sutphen Story

Back in the late 80s-early 90s i kept my boat (last 30 built, tripple modifyed 200 outboards ) in the Navasink Marina,Sea Bright NJ.(The marina is located on the Navasink River which leads to the Atlantic Ocean, only 12 miles from Manhatten as the crow flys).Back then if you ran LEGITIMATELY in the 80s you were flying. Before i came to the marina there was a guy who owned 32 Hustler (twin 370s ) named Phil U.Phil U owned a north jersey Porshe dealership and thought he was king the river. The first time we raced his reign was over (i went by him in any condition easily ).At the end of the summer he was so *issed off from the crap he heard EVERYDAY from people on the river( due to his obnoxious attitude)he went to Hustler and traded the boat in (it was only two years old )on a new 32.A new 32 which was custom built over the winter and rumored to run in the 90s.All winter Phil U talked more *hit then a salesman for Johnny On The Spot about the amount of money he had spent (200,000.00), the new Hustlers top speed, ect, ect.Honestly i was prepared to lose big time (after all i ran a conserative 85 mph).May comes, the Hustler gets delivered and my first day out Phil is in the channel WAITING.I have 4 people on board but figure to take my beating like a man.I walk him ,not by much but i still beat him.If you thought he was *issed before,FORGET ABOUT IT.That day (200 grand lighter) i am told he was on the phone with Hustler screaming.Hustler claimed (of coarse )it was driver error. The very next weekend they sent a sales rep down who was one of there test driversto match race in the ocean .This time I didnot have four in the Sutphen .We ran two on two with the Hustler guy driving and they got beat worse then before BY AN OUTBOARD SUTPHEN.Phil U was so upset he actually switched location to a south jersey marina.

To this day (almost twenty years ago )i can still see the look on Phil U face Basically Hustler got his 200 grand ,told him what he wanted to hear(speed wise) and set him lose never invisioning an outboard Sutphen to be that fast.No bull the guy was so embarrassed he moved the boat thirty miles away.

Re: Great Sutphen Story

Reminds me of a story my dad told me about another car dealer guy. Seems they're not always the brightest bunch!:p

Back in the day, my old man bought a Mercedes Benz 6.3 (with a 6.3 liter V8 engine). This was the baddest Mercedes engine available at the time, with 300 plus horsepower. Anyway, his buddy owned the Porsche, Audi, Volkswagen dealership in Avon CT, and he bet my dad that the new Audi Fox would beat it in a race.

$100 later he found out he was wrong. Really wrong! :evilb:

Isn't the red death still sitting at coty with trees growing in it in the back of the lot? What ever happened to that thing. My favorite boat of the day and people remember it and bring up the name with a story now and then.

There was a set of props on the wall at Navesink that said "Phil U. eat my shorts". Those props may even still be there! Those were some cool days back at Navoo!

Its up at Coty .Just basically let it go after truck hit the engines.Too much to fix, just not worth refurbishing ect.So you guys remember old Phil U After Phil U lost EVERY time that poor bastard would go near his boat some drunk at the Waterfront would YELL OUT and ask him where the Red Death was.I dont usually gloat, there is always someone faster BUT this is Phil U we are talking about and to say he used to be a -ick was an understatement.Poor Phil.Back in the day,GREAT TIMES,Great poeple (even you Phil)without a care in the world.

I just miss it.I got into the high performance cars for a while BUT it is just not the same.I figured what the hell( especially since it is definately a buyers market now.)if something comes along at a fair price in a Sutphen,Apache or Larry Smith i will go for it.Alot of these guys( especially the ones who justify paying mid 300s for a twenty year old boat) flat out crack me up.They try to treat me like it my first performance boat and i flat out fell of the back of a turnip truck bound for Mayberry or something.(Christ i was getting the Red Death boarded by the state troopers for driving through sail boat reggatas when most of those guys were sticking gum under their desks in the third grade)Hopefully its gunna be a good summer.WE ALL GOTTA get together.

PS the whole Phil U eat my shorts thing (if i remember correctly )came from one of the forklift drivers(Cotton?) who used to get on him (Phil) about his attire (either hiked up OP shorts or a Speedo). It wasnt just me or my crew that busted Phils -alls.

Frank ,,ask Chuck we talked about that boat last year. That boat ,unlike the Red Death was NEVER beat on at all. Pro Marine rigged it a few mothhs after mine and it really was never run hard. The problem is for how i want to run a 39 is a much better fit. Another problem is the good money on top of bad in a 20 year old boat factor. You would need 3 new outboards from Merc Performance (Stock outboards would fall apart MONTHLY(lower units center sections ect)guages ,paint ect.Even though the hull is structly in great shape you still drop an easy 80 grand. If you tried to do minor things as they were needed provided (parts were still available for those 2.4s) you would probably keep SEA TOW in business for the summer .If possible i definately want a ride on your Apache.

Re: Great Sutphen Story

It is an 1987.The last 30 built.Unfortunately the phrase good money on top of bad applies here. For what it would cost you to do anything with her its just not worth the time or the money. If you were to do something cost wise at least outboards ONLY FROM MERC RACING DIVISION (since it already is set up for them) would be the way to go.I am told the sucessor to the 2.4S on there already are in the 300hp range.Provided they dont weigh alot more than the 2.4 offshores 3 of them would get you in the 90 mph range. To get to that speed i/o wise you probably would need 1000 total horse (weight factor) involved.Use anything outboard wise not from Merc Racing and its just an excuse for distaster.I know i tried, leaving literally half an outboard on the bottom of the ocean(in heavy water i was breaking stock Merc 200 completely off at the center sections ) time after timethats why i went with the 2.4 offshores.

I hear ya! Ron took me for a ride a couple times in that boat, it was VERY light for its size. I could feel the water fluttering under my feet when going thru a 2 ft chop and the bow carried like it was a tunnel cat. The boat ran good when it wasn't broken though, I don't know how many power heads and lowers he blew up..

You're definetely welcome to come for a ride in the Apache anytime! :drink:

Ron has spares at home in the garage. Sharkey said he rigged that thing (rons sutphen) when he worked there. Must have been ages ago! Joe , too many tickets in the viper and now you want to get back out on the water and play? Moved back by the beach again? Lots of used boats to choose from ,good luck! :D

Jimmy Spiro's did most of the work maintenance on that boat, at least when I worked at the marina.

Re: Great Sutphen Story

The 33 is definately a light boat ,but remember the Red Death was only a 30 with the same power as Rons boat (even lighter). You had to be real careful with the tab and drive heights in the rough stuff or you broke a lower unit or a centersection.Even with the 2.4s (which were alot better than stock outboards)if you were not paying attention (HUNGOVER ECT) it could be an expensive day.

Re: Great Sutphen Story

Maybe i am missing something.I just had a guy e-mail me before about a special lightweight 41 Apache built in the lats 80s.Completely redone for 350,000.00 for an .New almost ,20 years ago it did not cost that much .Since the guy spent that much to refurbish the thing natuarlly he wants it back. How the hell do you refurbish a twenty year old hull (bulkheads stringers ect ) that in all actuallity has had the living crap beat out of it(Nobody buys a boat like that to run in smooth water).People who spent 800 grand on Outerlimits and Cigarrettes only a few years ago cant get mid 300s in this market .

Replacement Value vs. Retail Value....

REDDEATH 06-10-2007 03:56 PM

Where are you guys.My court case (REEF CLUB) should be done within the next month which HOPEFULLY means its time to find a boat. Please if any of you guys know of anything 39 plus staggered(Sutphen,Cig.Apache) with 6s call me thanks Joe.

hunster 06-11-2007 08:17 PM

I saw Ron had the sutphen out of the rack and on a work stand sat. Had a drink with Chuck and asked if he was planning on running it , he wasn't sure what the heck Ron was doing. He did say he had that and his little apache for sale again ( for like the 6th time) . Good luck Joe , I'll keep my eyes open for you!

REDDEATH 06-25-2007 11:31 AM

Chuck had a bad WEEKEND.He was coming aroung the hook and dropped two lower units on the Outerlimits.Thats a large boat in some bad water .He did not hit anything so he simply overwhelmed those Bravos.
