Looks real good I love the bilge. One thing to think about , If you get an oil leak those black engines wont be easy to see. i painted my Scorpion chevy orange and the Formula engines are gonna be the Merc blue. nice score on the carbs. My new 454 arrived yesterday looks awesome.

swordfish blair 03-02-2010 08:30 PM

First motor almost complete, re-rigging engine room. Come on spring.

sounds like a nice solid engine.
not much duration or overlap on the cam from the sound of it.
Whats the LSA and centerline?
Duration/ lift?

TOASTY 03-07-2010 09:55 PM

nice run vid! how much hp?
i am thinking about making a run stand for the new mills is there anything to take into consideration? should i put a guard where the flywheel spins to keep it safe? what gauges did you use?

CDC

olmako20 03-08-2010 08:12 AM

We went with a High Energy/Marine™, 260H: Cam & Lifter kit from Comp. Duration 260/260, Lift .440/.440. Im pretty happy with the way it idle. Im not sure what horse but im hoping its close to 300.

Toasty,

The stand was pretty easy to build. I basically just made a copy of the stringers in the boat and used all the mounting brackets that the boat uses. A guard probaby wouldnt be a bad idea. since i have the tranny bolted up to it i wasnt worried about it. The gagues i used were some cheap mechanical gagues from summit. oil pressure water temp and voltage. picked them up for $20. a good tool to have for the first startup.

30ctsutphen 03-09-2010 09:03 AM

can beat a run stand for break in especially on boat engines. It sucks to get it in and then find aleak or another problem.

Thats part of the reason I like the OB's so much they are easily accesible where I/O's make you a contortionist.LOL

There are many beneifts to I/O too though. Like the ease of finding parts for them.

I am assuming that 260 is advertised not at .50?

Scorpion Paul 03-22-2010 05:54 PM

Nice job guys looks great I see the ebay carb deal worked out. Come on get #2 done next.

Got most of the motor disassembled last night. The internals look pretty good but the crank will probably have to be sent out to be ground.

They sound good

30ctsutphen 05-01-2010 10:42 PM

looking good. Were you all alone on the river or where there alot of people out today?

olmako20 05-02-2010 03:45 PM

Took it out on the Niantic river. Pretty much the only boat out. Have an issue with some water in the oil so I have to sort that out.

Any ideas on what to check? The compression is good on all cylinders. New manifolds also. I don't really know where it is comming from. Is it normal to have some water in the oil that evaporates off?

As I am writing this i am broken down in my friends Donzi....tough weekend.

Boat looks great!! You have to love the classic Sutphen stance in the water!!

30ctsutphen 05-05-2010 10:13 PM

boat loo good but whats up down near thedrain plug?

Is that the paint peeling?

was this the deputy dawg boat from LI?

swordfish blair 05-06-2010 06:06 AM

Thanks guys,

The boat was originally red with blue trim from the factory, then someone awlgripped it. previous owner left it in the water for some time and damaged the new paint in a few areas like near the drains. Going to fix it eventually.

Yea it was called deputy dawg out of LI.

Taken her out twice so far and I'm amazed how it handles a 2-3 chop. Never been on a boat so dry, never even saw spray on the bow.

It looks great! Any performance numbers yet?

ChristianGott 05-06-2010 07:43 PM

Dont feel bad that drain hole area is a BIOTCH to get prepped right for paint. Lots of oily water drained from that area in the past I would imagine and its a tough spot to prep to start.

I was actually going to tell you they used awlgrip but you already know.

I hear it repairs and blends pretty well though so that helps.
It looks like its only cosmetic crap so who cares.

I just couldnt tell if thats what it was or if something was just stuck on the hull.

The CT river can make a boat look like that in 15 minutes.LOL

The boat looks great and runs great now, so you should have lots of fun with it this year.

anyone going out this saturday? I havent checked the weather yet.

olmako20 05-12-2010 06:21 PM

The boat runs around 55 at 4100 rpm. I'm thinking of giving bblades a call and trying a sent of their loaners. Has anyone used them before? Currently it has a set of 23 cleavers. Any suggestions of what to try? I want to be turning around 4600 WOT. Does that seem right for the merctrans/trs setup?

Anyone going out this weekend? Probably make a ctriver run sat.

OL40SVX 05-12-2010 07:12 PM

BBlades is the way to go if you want to test props!

ChristianGott 05-12-2010 07:26 PM

revolution 4's by bblades would be absolutely perfect...$.02

hell..i want 'em...

C what pitch props should he run? you have the same set up dont you?

I think I have cupped 26's on mine but its a OB boat.
Its probably totally different from a prop standpoint.

Nice!! Great Job.! :drink:

ChristianGott 05-25-2010 08:25 PM

i have revo 23's turning in on 1.5 cr alphas and stock 1987 350 mags...thru hull, but not performance..., i tried 21 3 blades in and out and the revo 23's out, too...in works great for the cruise speed...45-48 at 3300ish rpm...i've seen 68+ on gps, but i think the props dropped to 22's so they can spin looser, and some good exhaust might let me go a solid, safe, comfortable 72+. i'd like that.

mako...what reduction/ratios do you have....w 1.5, i'd try 21 revolutions turning in...guilford boatyards has a loaner program...i think the 23's would be too big with the drag of the trannies...depending on what hp do you think you have....?

btw, it took me 2 years research to pick my props...and i'm 99% content...tried none other than the 2 pr i own.

call me for a good,detailed discussion...203 687 6688

btw you sutties...going to be out on the river up near haddam after noon on sat..lunch at harbor park, maybe

dave911 05-27-2010 09:23 PM

That first pic is one of the best I've seen of a 26'. The sound is looking perfect! Good job!

olmako20 06-15-2010 06:50 PM

Bought some used 21p mirages off eBay to replace the 23p cleavers hoping to gain some RPM. I tried them out last weekend and nothing really changed. The WOT rpm was still at 4100-4200 and the top speed went down. Pretty dissapointed. I was hoping they would do something. Do you guys think that the motors are maxing out @ 4100 because of the head and stock 3" exhaust setup? Maybe they can't breath well enough?

I put the cleavers back on for the weekend. The weather is looking pretty good. Where is everyone planning on going? Claudios seems
like a good plan for Saturday!

ChristianGott 06-15-2010 07:44 PM

hey mak...
my buddy has seen you near the swinging bridge...he has the scarab cc just under it on the west side.....he actually thought you were me, and blowing him off! lol....his name is randy, and i've been using the ramp just to the north and east..he says your boat looks awesome!...stop by his marina, he's a good egg....i think we'll be there again on the 26th.....with the RR....call me 203 687 6688

i have a c/r pair of qs 21's that you can try...just as an "era appropriate" reference point...should let you spin 46-8..let me know....no, on the heads and exh..

olmako20 06-22-2010 08:49 AM

Thanks C! I might be out this weekend so maybe I'll see you out there. That would be cool to test those props sometime. I'm always looking to get some more performance out of her.

olmako20 10-29-2010 12:33 PM

I'm starting the winter projects and was thinking of sending the heads out for a valve job. Do you guys know of any good shops that are local here in CT that do good work? ball park pricing?

I had alot of issues with head gaskets this year and not sure why. Im also experiencing some really bad blow-by or what i think could be a hole in the piston. looks like some detonation problems.

I pulled the carbs apart last night to see what jets i had because i really havent looked into the carbs much. I am thinking that the carbs may be runing lean and making the engine run to hot. the primarys are 64 and the secondarys are 68 with a yellow spring on the vaccume. I dont know much about tuning carbs but do these numbers and springs sound about right?

hey mak...
a while back i used greco's in west haven. they are a full machine shop with a racing background, so no stuff is shipped out of house...fair prices, and they listen...if you know what you want, they'll accomodate...

billy the kid in torrington billy mathis his really name builds alot of busch north motors one of the best in the state

30ctsutphen 10-31-2010 04:00 PM

Billy mathis AKA Billy the kid is good.

Billy carlquest is good also.

The only person I use though Is Larry Leifert in Torrington. We are doing a 535 pontiac turbo engine together in the next few weeks.

He does all my stuff.

He did all Paul Newmans stuff too and paul could afford to go to anyone in the world.

Its only him and his brother Ed there, so you know some kids not learning on your stuff.

He has been building the fastest SBC GT1 enigines in the country for years and they take more abuse than you boat engines EVER will.

860 482 4533
The nicest guy you could Imagine too.

I have known him since I was 13 years old and hes been building my engines since I was 16 never once had one fail from anything he did wrong on machining or assembly.

Detonation on my part is a different story.LOL LEAN IS MEAN!
