New Haven Sutphen

I was at work the other day talking Sutphens to one of the mechanics I work with and He used to work for atlantic detroit diesel. He told me that they put 2 bigblocks in a sutphen in the street in the new haven area with a fork lift. He said they were scared sh**less that they were gonna drop the engines thru the bottom of the boat. They sea trailed it in New Haven harbor when it was finished. Sutphen guys seem to be pretty tight knit just wondering if it was anyone on here. ?????

I used to jet ski at new haven light house point all the time.
Dont know the guys or the boat though.

maybe Christian knows them or the boat

ChristianGott 12-21-2009 06:02 PM

if it was in west haven, i'd say they were pulling the motors before the boat went away...other than that, nothing...wasn't outside national oil was it?
know the colors, size or year...?

OL40SVX 12-21-2009 06:32 PM

Could it have been Dane's 33 from Branford?

Scorpion Paul 12-21-2009 07:16 PM

I will pick his brain some more tomorrow. This guy worked for Atlantic Detroits marine division for a while but was in middletown for years He mostly did big Detroits in stuff like sportfisherman models. just thought someone would say hey that was my boat. Its amazing what a small world it is.

Currently have a '83' Rum Runner that appears to have had big blocks in it at one time. High exhaust cutouts in cap, oil coolers, etc... now is getting two fresh sbc's and basically a complete rebuild overall. Will try and post some pics when its finished. Will also post some of my '87' with twin OB's.

OL40SVX 12-22-2009 05:16 PM

Hey guys thanks for the welcome. Yeah my OB version was on craigslist. The white one on the right I picked up about a month ago, sitting for years. According to Christine Sutphen it used to belong to a friend of theirs. When he had the boat it had small blocks. The cap has four holes in it which are wider than normal. The guy who was storing it said at one time somebody had BB's in it. She actually sent me some photo's of it in a parade with them in it, and one at the dock. Someone painted the boat white, as in everything, glass, fittings and all?? go figure. I am redoing the whole thing with a couple of stout smallblocks and we'll see what it runs. Motors should be about 320hp each on the conservative side. I have heard these boats run anywhere from 60 to 78 mph stock but I have no idea. Only had the OB out for a test run and it was knocking on 70's door with 26 choppers and 2.4 200's. Interior is flawless and exterior needs a little buffing.
