New Hull

Talked with Sutphen today about a 38' hull. They told me that they just pulled a new hull out of the mold... Super trick stuff...

BODYSHOT1 07-18-2002 03:42 PM

new 38?

..cool!! :D

Miller 08-28-2002 11:31 PM

Any pictures or new details about the 38? I think that sounds promising.

BODYSHOT1 09-03-2002 09:50 PM

nothing more on the new 38??

Sutphen's new hull

Saw Richies new hull. It will now be full 40ft.The bottom is still the same except for a small step at transom. The big news is the trick transom he has done.It is "pod" like and extends back from where flat transom ended.Engine compartment big enough to stagger engines or use shafts to get drives tight He's playing with surface drive on this one.Deck has three arrangements and will be a departure from "classic" Sutphen.

thanks..sounds very cool!

Sorry ,
No pics of new hull. Not sure Richie wants it out yet,but if he does I will get some. Can't wait to see his finished deck designs.( only saw protoype of aft end)As for the rest he describes it "Windshield will be gone, using wrap around wind deflector and will have scoops and built in swim steps." Never thought I'd see the day! When I worked there he would'nt even allow surface deck cleats....just bow eye and stern rings.

J-BOAT 09-13-2002 08:45 PM

I would have mixed feeling's about a different sutphen, but time's they are a chang'in.
Hope to be the proud owner of a classic sutphen soon.

Hey "J"
Know what you mean. Never thought I'd say that as I thought Richie was staying in the past but I have come to think of his style as "Classic". He is not a follow the crowd guy and not afraid to try something.

J-BOAT 09-14-2002 07:57 PM

I would think that after building such a bullet proof boat for so long he would be thinking about some way to better the hull, if that is at all possible.
But the sutphen design sure make's me stand up and take notice, every time I see one.

J-Boat,
He is standing pat on his hull design as it is fast when compared Apples to Apples .If all things equal kilo runs would be his. He will not sacrifice handling to sell boats with a "trick" bottom. His new transom design will blow your mind. Reminds me of some UIM boats.Have not seen complete Jazzed up deck yet so opinion is out( only saw aft mock up)

Update,
1st. 40ft. waiting for power to arrive,so no further progress. The 31 is getting a going over. A new deck design, cockpit deeper and wider and again no windshield with deck forming a deflector.

BODYSHOT1 09-30-2002 09:46 AM

..sounds very cool..can't wait to see 'em!

Met Richie a few years ago in Baltimore, what a great guy, down to earth! He has nothing to prove, he has already done it and they penalized him for it a few years ago.

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it"

Good moto to live by!
Can't wait to see new hull.

By the way anyone looking for a 1989 33' with triple outboards(2.4 EFI) let me know, I know where one is cheap!!

Tonym,
WHAT?? Are you sure? A 33 with triples. We did do a red 30 with triples. Norm was the 26 hull for O.B.s. I'd like a picture of that!

TonyM 10-09-2002 11:22 AM

I guess you worked for Richie? I don't remember the whole story but it is a light blue hull with a bracket and I think was rigged by ProRoc up in Brick NJ. May have been bought as a bare hull with no transom cutouts. I almost bought the boat last year but everybody told me to stay away from triples. I was on the boat and it is very clean, hull is oxidized from sitting outside but hardly a nick on it.

Hey TonyM,
Yes lots of things happen to boats after they leave factory and especially after 10-15 yrs. As soon as I clicked off I recalled a "custom" one off, that was done just before I started at Sutphen. It was a 38' center consol, with triples and featured in a magazine. The guy used it to go fishing in the Dry Tortugas.Claimed he could leave Fort Myers and return without refueling.Used to see boat docked under Ft Myers Beach bridge. Again this was a one off, which is what you could get with Richie. He used to say if they want "Blue shoes" we'll give it to them.
Still would like to see the 33.

TonyM 10-10-2002 09:19 AM

I will call the guy and see if it is still for sale, if it is, I will get some pics and post them and maybe sell it for him!

Stillcrazy,
Any factory updates or photos available yet of the new hull?

Sutphil
Haven't been back to see progress as Richie is a "hands on" kind of guy.You wont find him sitting at a desk. So giving him a little time. With the boat shows comming up I'm not sure if he wants pics released yet. I will ask the next time I'm there.

J-BOAT 11-26-2002 07:53 PM

If this suspence keep's building I may just wet myself.

New hull design update.
31' deck getting finishing touches on plug. Still recognizable as a Sutphen but lots of subtle changes, like fighter plane air intakes, reverse air dam wind deflector (no more windshields) and a little more rounded gunnels

floatingphil 12-09-2002 01:52 PM

Rounded gunnels like the stern section of the old 20's and 30's?

Stillcrazy 12-10-2002 08:16 AM

Sutphil,
Yes, but change aspect by increasing the height. Until Rich is finished this is like the blind man trying to describe an elephant. Anyway I will keep impressions coming for what they are worth.
