Yours is the blue/yellow boat that was for sale in Loto last year, correct? If it is, I believe that boat, or one very similar was for sale in the Chicago area probably six or eight years ago.

finishline 03-31-2015 09:48 PM

Yes is WAS the blue and yellow one. Makes sense it being in Chicago it had Illinois registration I can see stained into the yellow paint it had a military theme vinyl wrap on it a few years before I got it from what im told I never saw it with the wrap The Insanity lettering was under the yellow and blue paint job. If anyones interesedt in the overhaul Ill be happy to post pictures of the progress.

Wow looks like a big project, good luck with it. What are you doing for power and drives?

yeah stripping that old paint job was a task im not doing much with the interior this year. on the back it will get 380 planes imco SC drives with -2 shortys and Imco neutral boxes. motors are in the 420-500hp range not real sure on exact specs Im probably going to pull one down to see what im working with. they seemed to run well last year and sound healthy. still kicking around the Idea of moving the drives up 2-3 inches.

JamesGang 04-23-2015 10:51 PM

Sounds cool. 1000 horse should get you in to the 90s.

finishline 04-26-2015 05:05 PM

I have a 31 I'm rebuilding currently just found it odd how few there were compared to 33-34 boats. It's nice to have people with similar boats to bounce ideas off of

finishline 05-07-2015 10:14 PM

I'm getting the hardware layed out on the transom looks like I'm going to be running the drives with the prop shafts at 3.5 inches below the bottom that is with the Imco -2 drives I have. I feel this should be good for my style of boating. I'm getting the steering cylinder mounts layed out next I'm thinking about running them in between the drives Due to the tabs interfering with the mounting standoffs I'll need due to running Imco extension boxes.

Nice boat! Keep up the work and pictures! Looks like you also got a real nice shop to work on it! I need a shop like that one day!

benjen 05-09-2015 04:30 PM

Honestly there are not a lot of Sutphen's regardless of size!

this is similar to how I want to set up my steering. with a bracket set up like this for the rams at the transom but I would need a stand off of some sort has any one done something similar with there twin engine boats. also I wouldn't mind checking out what you guys have done as far as stand offs for your steering rams on your boats.

WHY bother if you have boxes you surface..............you don't go 3.5 below the bottom what a waste of boxes and time and hardware

So with a prop shaft height of 3.5 below with running a 14.5 inch prop Im going to have 3.75 inches of blade Surfacing Correct?

My Math 14.5 divide by 2 = 7.25 inches minus 3.5 inches below boat hull=3.75" of prop blade Surfacing. with the 36'' drive center this seems to be a safe number to avoid pulling a drive out of the water to far when cornering

I appreciate the pictures and positive input Everybody im going off of a lot of tried and true knowledge but am always down for more schooling on the Sutphen boat
And Ill waste my money and boat parts however I want Ms Gangway!

MSGANGWAY 05-14-2015 11:26 AM

fine you could do something really weird and call the factory and maybe get the right way it's done
if you have money to waste then by all means be my guest.....but don't blame the boat when you
have a slug on your hands.

I bought a 99 last year but they call it a 3200 with Bravo's so must be a 32. I measureed rub rail to rub rail its 30ft exactly plus the drives. These are some fine handling boats, especially in rough water, and very good speed also. Just good overall feeling when cruising. Riders are usually impressed.

i have a magazine article where this exact boat was picked up by Hot Boat Magazine in 99 and tested and put an article in the magazine. When i can dig it up i could post it on this forum, but never posted a file before so not sure how.

By the way, the water scoops, how far below the hull are they?

This boat came with Latham rectangular scoops that were a ridiculus 7/16" to 1/2" deep, and they are 2 1/4" wide at that. Lot of drag. Latham was no help with advice other than "that's the factory recommendation" so i started grinding off 1/8" at a time and watched the pressure. I ended up at 1/8" below and stopped there. I have heard you can go up to even. Filing a radius in the front edge helps draw the water up so i did that also. Drags much less, not so gigantic and trough dug in the water behind them anymore.
