School me on 33/34 sutphens

Ok help me out here folks. I just sold my 28 checkmate and I am in the market for a bigger boat. I have been looking a lot at the 33 powerplays, there a are a few 34 sutphens as well. What are some of the big differences between the 2? It seems both will be great wave crushers. From what I looked up sutphen is a little lighter at 6600lb vs 7200 for pp with 2" less in beam (according to nada website) seems to take a bunch of power to get high speeds 500hp+ for 80mph. I think I could be happy with 90 mph would 600s do it?

How does the ride compare between a 33pp, 32 AT, and 34 sutphen? Cockpit size similar? Cabin?

Do I dare throw a 35 fountain in the mix for possible new boat as well? there are a ton of them, and I'm am not running the ocean. Mostly inland finger lakes in NY, maybe Ontario of Eire a couple times a year. Am I going to be bored with a big heavy wave crusher or are they still fun to drive?

Thank you for all the help, for the first time in my boating life I am in a position to be somewhat selective and have many options available. I want to learn and hopefully ride in as many boats as possible.

Richie Sutphen has a 309 new design hull at the shop. That hull with 2 LS 600 hp small blocks would run at least 90 MPH. I have the same hull with a 900 blower motor that runs in the 90 MPH range. When we get in the rough stuff , the 309 will leave the 33 to 35's in its wake. Any questions call Ernie @ 401-265-6225.

Hi AE..
I went from a 24x7 Condor, to a 26' Sutphen Rumrunner with twin 350Mags, to The 33/34's. Here's what I think:
I think the PP has a lower freeboard and a flatter bottom. That said, it's a low profile screamer that I considered too. The 33/4 SUT OR has quite the deep V. It really handles the ocean very well, which is what I wanted. The 32 AT has a high deck, thus the cabin room. I would leave the 35 Fountain out of the mix unless you are looking for the amenities. They have really well fit cabins, but I think a 35 Fountain is really like 29 feet because of the beak and built in swim platform. A 30/35Sonic also has a good balanced set up.
The 33 OR is the boat I've always wanted. It's quick, handles the rough, and has a basic, functional cabin. For me, it's the perfect balance of capability and functionality.
I've been told my boat will run 90+ with 690hp 540's. Speed and durability/reliability should be a major factor. What are you going to use the boat for? I've got it, but I'll probably rarely use it. I like clean lines and basic cabin so there's a wow factor and space for my kids and I to "camp out". It's really about figuring out what you "really" want the boat for and just going for it...no matter what anyone else says.
Hope I helped a bit. Call me if you want.
C

Easy Ernie...:riding:

P.S. I would consider the PP in Lake George (in the classified)...looks very nice, but it goes back to the amenities thing. It's got a pretty plain cabin, like mine. It's a good machine.

AE Stream 07-28-2015 04:44 PM

Unfortunalty boxer I don't think I could afford a new Sutphen,

Yeah my good buddy has a 35 Sonic that is a great boat, lots of cabin and cockpit space, but it is a slower boat that he admits can get boring on inland lakes

I fell in love with the sutphens after Morgan took my wife and I for a day adventure in the 21SS blue boat. Most of my boating is on the inland finger lakes in upstate NY, they dont get that rough and maybe lake ontario but if it is nasty my wife and 4 year old would probably make me turn back. The 2 things i need in a cabin is a place for my wife and I to sleep 3-4 times a year. And storage for all the **** that she packs, so there are not 4 bags all over the cabin. We utilized all of the cabinet and storage space in my checkmate to keep things looking neat for me.

The only reason I was looking at fountains is the cockpits seem bigger than the powerplay and speed, I am afraid of gettting a deep V that is no fun to drive if the lake is not rough.

I just have a problem with people calling a spade a spade. I have seen Fountains fall apart at races. Unless the boats were built initially as race boats, Fountains had problems in the rough stuff. The 26 I raced for 6 years never had so much as a stress crack. Whether you buy a new, or a used Sutphen, it's hard to go wrong. As with any used boat proper investigation is necessary.

Thats not a 33. Its the sistership to Boxers boat.

chsales 07-30-2015 02:38 PM

Correct, oops it's a 31 not 33

AE Stream 07-30-2015 03:04 PM

How fast would a 33 be with a pair of 525sc? And how well would Standard Bravo 1s hold up on that large a boat?

Brian, you're a little sensitive. I wasn't talking about your boat.

bwd 08-01-2015 04:20 PM

I know Ernie. I was genuinely interested that you thought the smaller 30 was speedier than the 33/34s. I'm not defending my 34 in a sut thread. Do you think your boat would be just as fast with 2 500s as with the single 900?

Hey Jeremy, very cool your considering a Sutphen. I 'm biased but I think out of everything you mentioned, all around you guys would love either a 31 or 34 Sut. Been on every one you mentioned and I'll tell you about what I think in more detail when I see ya this weekend. Give me a call before the weekend i need to know where we go to find the ramp up there.

Hi Erny, Dan, Ken, Sean, Christian, and all the rest of you Sutphen guys. Hope everybody's having a good summer. We gotta find my buddy Jeremy here a good boat.

AE Stream 08-05-2015 09:19 AM

Thanks Jim, I'm looking forward to this weekend

Sick Stinger 08-05-2015 10:08 AM

Shaun Harrington had a really quick 33 , set up was dead on id say due to power drive set up and speed it ran. I'd touch base with him

Hey Dan did you go to see the white with red stripe 34 in Texas?

Cap'm Kurt 03-12-2016 10:37 AM

Can ya'll fill me in on the various sutphen boats made say in the 90's and newer.
Mine is listed on tltle as a 3200, measures 30 exactly from rub rail to rubrail, and just under 32 with the bravo drives.
Just curious. I wouldn't give mine up for anything. Perfect size and handling for all around use. Handles rough water really well. Decent speed too for a 27 vee.

Cap'm Kurt 03-12-2016 10:39 AM

although i might add i would love a pair of small blocks in it.

I bought a 31 new back in 1991. Still have the brochures that came that year. Just scanned them. I'll post them up. Gives you some info from early 90s.

That boat on the brochure is probably mine. I'm in the process of removing the red stripes on my boat right now. Those colors, among others, were under the red that is on there now!

JamesGang 03-16-2016 05:02 PM

Hey Herb, and Ben. Hope all is well. You can thank me for that. Pretty cool if its your boat. It has the smoked colored wind screen like yours. I like it with the Yellow stripes. You gonna leave it like that?

benjen 03-16-2016 06:27 PM

We are doing great thanks for asking. It's funny because in pictures our boat looked pretty good I thought. But the stripes always bothered me. Up close the red stripes with gold trim weren't the best paint job to say the least. Once we started stripping it we found several color schemes underneath. For the time being I think we are just going with all white. Obviously we can always do something later.

OL40SVX 03-16-2016 06:44 PM

sure.... go with an all white boat!!!!

benjen 03-16-2016 08:12 PM

Dan, what are you doing? Sounds pretty busy at the shop these days........good for you!
