26 hull build
How is the build on the 26 sutphen? Solid fiberglass hull and sides? balsa cored deck? thanks
|
Depends on year. Generally you can say they were over built like brick **** houses. Call Richie Jr. in NJ. He probably built most that you will find. He also has the molds to build a new one although he retooled the mold to a 27'. Good luck.

the 26' were not built in NJ they were built in Florida maybe he should call the factory and ask........just saying

Are you looking to build one or buy an old one. Jr. was at Sutphen building while his father was out racing and has the molds for the Rum runner or the new 277. I would call him for any info you need on either. He is a wealth of information not just on these but on every Sutphen ever built. Just my $.02.

I'd like to find an older one. Not a basketcase project, but something that has no power or needs some work like transom and stringers would be ok. Almost bought a 24 banana last week, but seller backed out 24hrs before my 10hr drive to get it.

I agree. The 26 is worth the wait. I have 2 friends who own them and they both love them. Great all around boat.

I probably shouldn’t even respond to a comment like that, BUT. You either no little of Jr. or possibly know him better then you let on and have some sort of an insecurity issue. I hope you can get a handle on that. Were here just trying to help a guy who asked for some. Either source would have given him the info he desired but I thought since Jr. has the molds why not just call him, he is a wealth of info and I have been amazed by what I’ve learned talking to him. I’m not trying to start a pissing match here and ruffle a bunch of feathers but fair is fair, not trying to take anything away from Sr., but Jr. has earned his credibility. Your post makes it sound like you think he’s clueless. I remember being at the Norwalk Ct. boat show a few years back and the guys from Outerlimits kept walking by this boat and saying he’s a real artist to be able to create something so flawless and straight. That’s not the original 20 Hull it’s the new 21 and a new style deck. I would say its on his merits.

Where did the 21' come from??do you know?

A wise mam once said " when arguing with a fool, it's hard to tell who is who"

you have no idea what you are talking about..........it is sad that everyone thinks they know but they are only hearing one side and it takes two ...........so just think if everyone told the truth.

I have a 26 for sale. It has already been customized and isn't listed cheap by any means. However, I would sell her less power and drive if interested.
|
wstulz, I've seen your boat listed. beautiful job, just not my style. prefer older original look. thank you though.

Hey Bob,
Are you looking for an Outboard or Sterndrive boat? The 26 worked well rigged either way. Anthony |
1st choice would be sterndrive, but I would not rule out outboards.
|
Actually I do know exactly where the 21 came from. A line of lineage that started on Lake Hopatcong, NJ, and then down to Cape Coral, FL. The 20' models were popular on the APBA race circuit in South Florida during the early 70's and keeping up with Aronow and his small Donzi's and later the 20 Cigarette, SR built the original 20's for that circuit. JR worked with his father in Cape Coral learning every facet of boat building and racing.
http://www.sutphenpowerboats.com/sut..._final_002.htm JR later obtained the mold for the 20 (and 26, now retooled 27) from his father and built the last 20's ever made in Hopatcong, NJ in the early 2000's. I approached JR in the mid 2000's to build me a 20 outboard bow-rider and at the time JR realized the 20 mold was dated and the deck mold had run it's course. JR then cut the 20 hull mold and added approximately a foot, extending the original running surface. JR then totally retooled a new deck plug which is the current 21 deck mold. I was in his shop very often watching the process. The new 16 is also a retool done by JR. SR is an industry innovator, an awesome guy to chat with and an amazing resource of knowledge. Prior to buying my last boat we chatted at length about building me a 31 with outboards or converting the red 31 single IO boat he had sitting in his building into an OB. JR has never stopped building, rigging and refurbishing boats of all makes and models. |
