potential 390 project...need input from the community
came across the old Benjen 390 hull on trailer in south texas. boat is in good shape, on a nice trailer. need power and drives. originally a #6 boat, so that complicates things if i wanted to put some Merc power and bravos on it.
My question for you guys since i've got no experience with a Sutphen hull - how are they for a poker run setup type boat, and what speeds do we think are realistic out of a 390 with some beefed up 500's and bravos? the cost of 6's makes it difficult for me to want to take on a project, but i know where to source motors and some bravo drives. would likely close in the cabin, and do a 4 seat PR type setup, similar to the 33 that was recently redone with LS power (big fan of that). thoughts? https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...f76461686f.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...b280a00d06.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...abd20a8c7d.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...b187b5f690.jpg |

Plus moving the engines back and relocating / aligning everything............might upset the handling ? not sure

adding 6's to the project kinda throws it out of the park. |
Yep, its a whole different game moving to a #6, props alone are 10x the price of bravo's.......I dont know what the going price is to plug and recut a transom

What do these weigh?
Sick Stinger just parted that out last year. IMO, if you can't swing # 6's for it, roll on by. After the trouble of all the transom work I'd guess you'll eat Bravos up with that, even XR's Unless you lollygag around at 2000 RPM all the time. So there's that headache. |

factory was 7600lbs. thoughts on NXT's? would save me redoing transom.
I'm not buying that just yet. Maybe that's with no power or drives. Hopefully some knowledgeable Sutphen guys chime in. The owner used to be on here. Think it said 1000HP a side and he was at 107MPH. |
Well what do ya know, that unrigged Facebroke ad had this photo of a brochure. Courtesy of that guy. :drink:
Claimed 8550 dry with 500's and Bravos. I was guessing heavier than that. Bravos regardless. Good luck. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...b8429a1200.jpg |
since this was orignally rigged with 6's, it would be heavier for sure.
Hoodoo 2.0 its all yours if you want it. not wanting to spend #6 money on a 'could run good, if i throw 80K at it' |
What are they asking for it ? does anything else come with it

possibility for transom to be bad, BUT if youre going to pay to convert it to bravos that has to be done regardless. i figure depending on weight and power, with maybe 600hp per side and bravos it could be a low 80's boat, prob upper 70's tho if its 9000lbs. I figure that trailer has to be worth 6K easy. |
30-35K drives
12-16K transom assemblies 35-40K engines 5-7K trannies 8-10K exhaust 10K misc Buy Moses TG turn key, add gas and go.......lol |

I have a video on our YouTube channel (NorthEast Powerboats) of BenJen's 39' firing up in Connecticut in 2014/15. The title of the video is 'Sutphen 39 Dominator Startup' - it's LOUD. (Can't post links yet as it's a new OSO account but worth watching)

I know that boat, I was on it with Herb, Ben and Jimmy Knowles one summer, Herb was getting it around 110 mph I think so, that boat will run the best with #6, it’s a total beast with 1000hp a side, with bravos you will never achieve that.
I was in talk with Dave but USCG registration was teared up a bit but enough to give me a trouble with export, im glad someone got it, welcome to Sutphen family, nothing runs line Sutphen. |
My 390 is the one on the brochure with the lightening bolt, bravo XRs on boxes I run 92-93 with 780hp per side. If setup properly it will run fast w bravos and give decent reliability obv depending on how it’s driven/throttled.

Do anyone know if this boat was sold?
