Alpha Drive for 454

3 Attachment(s)
This is an Alpha drive for a 454 mag. This is the 1.36 ratio which uses heavier duty gears compared to the 1.5 ratio small block version. 180 hours on drive. $old!

Are you 100% sure that the alphas that went behind BBC had stronger gears?? I always thought they are the same other then gear ratios..

The original was a 1:32 the HD version was the 1:36 had both on my Pachanga 22.

Its no bravo, but it is stronger than a 1.5. This is copied from the sterndrive.com site. I'm not going to pretend to be a drive expert because I'm not.

"Before the Bravo drive was introduced, Mercury mated the big block engines to an Alpha with a heavy-duty 1.50:1 drive (labeled HD 1.50:1) which really didn't hold up too well.
They changed the ratio to a 1.36:1 which held up better."

Could you post up pics of the drive please. Or email [email protected]

Just to help out a bit,,,the 1:36 gears on a GEN I Alpha where heat treaded,,thats it !!!!!

They look the same in size and shape ...but when Merc started the heat threadment was around the time the 1:36 came out for the 330 HP 454's..a lot of them where on Pachanga's up to 32 feet with twins and actualy lasted and the boat ran in the low 60's..

Just thought i share this ?!:party-smiley-004:

GeeterB 05-22-2010 05:36 AM

I had a 27' Mach One with twin 454's and alphas and they never had a problem...and I ran it pretty hard...got a good 400 hours out of them...I loved that old boat...by no means the best boat out there...but I had lot's of fun with it
