Little history on the Blue Thunder from the book "Phony war on drugs"
________________________________________________

The Customs soon found that the Blue Thunder catamarans were highly unseaworthy and highly unsuitable for the task of chasing down other speedboats, including above all Aronow’s earlier model Cigarette boats, which were now produced by a company not controlled by Aronow. Blue Thunder was relatively slow class, capable of a top speed of only 56 miles per hour, despite the presence of twin 440-horsepower marine engines. The design of the catamaran hulls lacked any hydrodynamic advantages, and the boats were too heavy to attain sufficient lift. The stern drives were too weak for the powerful engines, leading to the problem of “grenading” . Most Blue Thunders spent more time undergoing repairs than chasing drug runners in the coastal waters of Florida. Blue Thunder was in boating parlance “wet,” a complete lemon, useful only for photo opportunities and publicity shots.

I have a buddy with a MINT USA Racing 39. While its not a rocket ship, its about as fast as a 38 Flatdeck cigarette V bottom with comparable power. It is however, built like a TANK, and handles rough water unbelievably well. Very Very stable in rough seas. His currently has 600HP bbc engines and ssm III drives. Drives have been bulletproof on his setup, and runs about 70mph. They look cool as hell in my opinion on the water, with the real wide beam and molded in swim platform. Definitly not the boat you want if top speed is your thing, but hardly a pile of crap.

Im with joe they are cool boats..

Here we have a guy trying to sell a piece of history and someone kick's him rite in the balls with a article about Blue thunder..back then the mechanical technology was not as good as it is today..the blue thunder boats were way under powered, drop a pair of 800sc's with a set of surface drives in it and then post your opinion!!!!!!:angry-smiley-038:

There was one for sale on OSO for a long, long time. It had pretty fresh 800SC's and I think 3A's and was complete. It looked pretty nice in the pics. I think it finally sold for about 50k.
There is just no demand for an old cat that is slower than newer V bottoms.
