Maybe they are actually 72C ? Most high performance transmissions are based on the 72C. The 71C is a small block trans with smaller internals.

How can I tell the difference between the 71c and 72c?

Green tag versus Red tag. The 71C was mated to alot of TRS drives, beefier then the merc trans 2. I had them in my old Cigarette Mistress. I had them done by Huber and they were then called Huber 925s.

The 71c is an inch shorter in length. Going from 71c to 72 requires the engine to be moved 1 inch to accomodate the tranny
