If the engine is an internal balance 502 and the original balancer ( balance weight tab on inside edge) was balanced by Mercury as a part of the crankshaft balance then a new balancer would have to be rebalanced with that rotating assembly to be correct.
In some cases the 502 engines can be internally balanced with that type of crankshaft in which case the balancer will be a neutral balanced part and only require its seperate balance for use.

Best Regards,
Ray @ Raylar

Sorry, that makes no sense if its internal balanced and the balancer (more appropriately damper) is balanced to the assembly. Internally balancing an external balance motor usually employs adding some Mallory metal to the crank to make up for the lack of a counter weight on the "balancer". It also makes no sense that Mercrusier would have altered the external counterbalance of the harmonic damper.

Even though the machine shops sometimes like to have the flywheel/flexplate and damper when balancing a rotating assembly, they only want them to make sure they are truly neutral or the proper counterweight. Unless you specifically ask a machine shop to balance a rotating assembly any way other than the factory counterweight or neutral for whatever reason, that is what they do. If the 502 is an external balance application (which normally they are), than any good aftermarket external balance BBC damper will work. Likewise an external balance assembly converted to internal will accept any BBC neutral balance damper. Any other off combination would be considered a bastard.

FYI I do have a BHJ Dynamics SFI Billet damper, external BBC new in the box. This should be the balancer that motor would need if your old one has part of the back side of the balancer filled in. Hardin marine sells these for upper $400 I believe. I’m looking for $250 shipped.

Yes. All 502s are externally balanced, and unless theres been some modifications to your dampener for balancing purposes other than the factory balancing, then you can just put a new replacement right on with no issues.

Did you find your balancer? Have one if your didn't. Have 1 Barry Grant 850 Demon if that helps.
