5 lug axles with 14" tires is most likely a 2500# axle, which makes it a 7500# trailer

Not necessarily. I have 5 lug 14" rims and 3500lb axles. Tires are 1750lb a piece.

But if his 8k lb boat is overloading it than you are probably right.
