Is it common for #4 to have a 19 spline prop shaft?

Sick Stinger 08-19-2017 05:52 AM

Yes number 4 is more commonly a 19 unless it's a big shaft 4 in which it's a 26.

Yes.. the SSM III and IV came from Mercury with 19 spline shaft the upgrade is changing out the bottom end and installing the 26 spline shaft as found in the SSM IIIAs and Vs

If the propshaft is pitted and the seal leaks its not the endall be all ... as long as the shaft is good ehere the bearing rides then the shaft can be turned down and hard chromed back to better than OEM without sacrifice of strength... IMO whoever buys these will be going thru them or sending them out to have them gone thru... Collabella is the SSM go to guy down there...

I just lifted the drives with the forklift to inspect the seals. I'm mechanically inclined and build my own engines. I don't work as a mechanic. I build boats. That being said, the seals look to be in excellent condition. They do not appear to be rotted or dried out. I also check the lower unit for any water. Loosened the screw and only oil came out in both drives. There was no water whatsoever. Looks as its been serviced as it was still nice and green. There is some pitting between where the prop ends and the seal. Doesn't appear to be any at the seals. Usually if the seals are bad, there's water in the drives. If someone is interested in the drives there are plenty of mechanics they can be taken to for inspection prior to purchase. I'm in Stuart Florida on the east coast. There are a lot of boats here. I would recommend changing the seals no matter what. Of course I believe in preventative maintenance.
