Mercury HP 500 and XR Drive

Mercury drivetrain package. The Engine is an HP 500 Mercury gen 5 motor that’s completely dressed less headers. Completely rebuilt from the pan up last July. Has 8hrs on it. Some details are 509ci, holly 750 carb, dart intake, MSD ignition, 9.8 to 1 comp ratio, comp roller chain, canton 8qt oil pan, arrowmotive fuel pump&regulator, new forged pistons, all ARP studs and bolts. The list goes on 650hp on dyno and would be happy to meet you and re dyno. The drive just came back from the bravo shop in lake of the Ozarks and has yet to been filled with oil. It’s a new style swepback XR 1.50. All new gears and shift linkages and so on in the upper and lower. Comes with warranty from them. I have receipts to support everything on drive and motor. Zero disappointments, bolt your headers on, hook up your fuel line to my pump and turn the key. $15,000

Images of the engine, drive, dyno data, supporting docs, location, prices for each item would be very helpful.

I guess I haven’t made enough posts to post a photo. The price is as a package. However if someone is interested in just the motor I would then separate the drive. Located in Rochester NY. My cell is 585-259-0823 I would be happy to provide any photo you like. Thanks

How much for just the motor and who built it ?

29Fountain1986 03-26-2019 01:22 PM

Make offer. Michael Mastin Speed Shop. Won’t find him online. A local well known engine builder in conesus ny.

In addition to the post, the drive is not under warranty due to the lower was not rebuilt by them. The lower was built at a local mercury dealer. Working out details to what would need to be done so it can be.

Thanks

How much for just the drive? Does it have low water pick up? Thanks.

Sick Stinger 03-26-2019 08:57 PM

Should be a LWP Drive, looks to be a speedmaster or imco

29Fountain1986 03-27-2019 01:38 PM

It is a low water pick up mercury sportmaster. The drive will be an easy sell so I’m trying to find a home for the package but I would separate. To separate I would want the motor sold first. Open to offers for motor or package. Thanks

This motor is coming out and a blower one is going in. I would rather not hang on to it. Got enough around the shop. 14000 for package.

29Fountain1986 03-30-2019 04:48 PM

The stock mercury HP500 steel heads. Rebuilt as well. All new valve guides and hot tanked.

I see a Donzi in the back ground....I can only wish it would fit in my Donzi. Put it on the Donzi FB page

Nice, what upgrades were made during the rebuild that produced that 150 hp gain?

little more compression, mild pump gas cam, and a little better intake.

Just trying to figure out how a cam swap and a slight bump in compression made 650.... we had a 540 9.3:1 and Brodix bb2x Cnc ported heads and only made 650....

ScottiG 04-19-2019 12:47 AM

@BnBz28... It is probably worth noting that the numbers may be a little apples to oranges, compared to your 540... At what RPM did you make 650? - This engine is being twisted to 6200 to make that number, (more RPM at a given displacement somewhat emulates larger displacement at lower RPM) Think in terms of the engine acting as a simple air pump... You gain more CFM with RPM... more air + more fuel = more power... If you look at the numbers between 5k-5.5k the engine is making the modest gains you'd expect over a HP500 given the cam swap, additional bump in displacement, and compression (keep in mind it is now a 509)... So the numbers seems pretty realistic, all things considered. Frankly speaking, I think the cam choice may not be optimal, as the power keeps climbing into an area where the engine would generally see little use, and begins to reach relatively high piston speeds for the hardware involved. That said, however, it should fair well in terms of reliability as it is not built to the bleeding edge to make bloody murder at 5.5k RPM.
