I've never bought anything on this site and I'm wondering how this would work? I use Ebay a lot but they offer assurances. Obviously you would want to be paid before you would ship anything.... So what protection would I be afforded once I've already paid for the item?

Probably none unless you go through PayPal and the seller is willing to eat their fee or you pay the fee. As a seller never send anything without being paid up front and as a buyer do whatever due diligence you can but you're always taking a bit of a chance. I hardly list anything on eBay anymore. Their fees are ridiculous. Facebook marketplace is the go to place to buy and sell anything and everything these days

I quit selling when they added the requirement to link my bank account. But it's still a great place to buy items. I've bought plenty of stuff on the market place but never had anything shipped... Ebay does offer great protection and I've been refunded several times due to poor descriptions... And I only buy from 99.9 or higher... I guess I'll just have to start with something that's pretty straight forward... I'm looking for propellers which are anything but straight forward...
