BBC Block Oil Filter Cap Conversion Kit
 

Guys,

During my 496 rebuild, we have reworked some of the remote oil routing, and reimagined/reengineered the hardware to accommodate. We plugged the two external block inlets/outlets as well as the pressure bypass valve, which will ensure that ALL the oil goes through the filter, not just what doesn't go through the bypass. This essentially turns this OEM assembly into a simple inlet/outlet and eliminates all the hard line plumbing that severely got in the way while changing the #7 spark plug (those who know, know, ya know?). While I simply modified my block oil filter socket cap, the builder has asked me to make him a block filter socket cap for his engine, to accommodate the through fitting I designed and made for mine.

So, never to pass up on a business opportunity, I thought I'd ask....

Would there be any interest in a "conversion" kit? It would include the cap, center fitting and a plug for the pressure bypass valve. The cap is going to be 6061-T6 aluminum and the through fitting and bypass valve plug will be 316 stainless. No modifications are required, other than the obvious plumbing and removal of the bypass valve. The cap will be secured exactly as the OEM assembly is. It will not look exactly like the OEM cap, for simplicity of machining, but it will still accommodate the fitting the same way. The center fitting is a -12 AN, and the tapped hole is 1/2” NPT.

My oil change is not convenient....reaching over engine to unscrew rear r/s horizontal filter ......relocation to front r/s with vertical filter position yes, would be best....BBC 572's

Always appreciate the input, but this has nothing to do with where you locate your remote filter head. This just simplifies the plumbing and directs all oil flow through the filter and cooler, instead of allowing a rather large portion of the oil pump's output to bypass them both.

To your point, though, I agree. While I'm not sure my filter head placement is going to be overly convenient, I wanted it OFF the engine, and the transom was about the only logical place for it in my boat.

This would be the “kit”, if there’d be any interest. My builder asked for one for his engine, so I made an extra (old toolmaker’s habit).

The cap is 6061-T6 aluminum, the center fitting is 316 stainless and the plug is 304 stainless. The O-rings are Viton, so they are essentially impervious to the oil. The bypass valve plug has a 1/4-20 blind tapped hole in it for, in the event it needs to come out, it can be slide hammered out. The center fitting is a 10AN connection and has a 1-1/4” hex. The side port is 1/2-14 NPT.

No modifications need be made other than the plumbing and the removal of the bypass valve if the end user wants it blocked off.

Honestly, for what they are available for, I can’t make them for what people would pay for them. At my shop rate, this kit would likely be close to $300, and this doesn’t include all the other bits that are necessary. Sometimes, these things are labors or love. I’m proud as Hell of these widgets I make, but others, probably not so much. We are more of a prototype/R&D shop, and we’re just not set up for the kind of production runs that would make these appealing and practical for us to make.
