Shelby GT500KR
I've seen post's on the site about everybody showing their rides so I just had to post this little tidbit.
Two days ago one of my good friends picked up a 1968 Shelby GT 500 KR (king of the road) in original unrestored condition. The car has 53K origanal miles. Before he purchased the car he took a mustang "authenticator" (?) to check all the #'s. Everything looked great. The car has the 450 h.p. Lemans 428 Cobra jet. Now here's the catch...........he picked it up for $35K!!! He brought it home on a roll back and by the time he got home he had already recieved 4 calls about selling the car. Yesterday he had a collector come from Indiana to check out the car. He offered him $80K  He has had many people come and look at the car including several historians, collectors, etc. etc. At this point he wants to keep the car for one week and sell to the highest bidder. Not bad for two day's of work. This is the classic "son went to Vietnam" find. I went and checked out the car, and it has 53K miles of wear and tear. Looks like it was a daily driver back in the day. The car purr's like a kitten. Sorry to ramble, I just thought it was a cool story. |

Re: Shelby GT500KR
Wow .. makes me want look in every old barn :D
|
Re: Shelby GT500KR
I got a friend in Mississippi that does that for a living, he tows a car hualer around the country and digs around in barns. He finds about 3 a year. He specialices in early F1 cars and make a mint on them. He bought one for 500 bucks from a guy in nebraska and sold it at Laguna Seca for 200k. not a bad profit. He said the biggest problem is when teams modified cars to keep running them for a few seasons cuase they dont have much value that way and in the olden days racing budgets didn't allow for 10 cars a year.

Your friend needs to wait and get that car in Arizona next year for the Barret-Jackson Auction. The guys with big bucks will pay a premium for an Original KR.

Re: Shelby GT500KR
I grew up in Grosse Pointe Mich. At the time there were a lot of auto execs living there. One of my friends bought a factory show car from one of them. It was a red 70 Boss 429 Mustang with Shelby GT 500 hood, front end, and tail grafted on. In addition it had a white Couger interior. He bought it for 2000.00 and drove it for 2 years until things started to go wrong with it . He sold it in 75 for 2000.00. We never had any idea how valuable these car would become. It was a pig to drive around town, got terrible gas milage, but on the open road it was a beast.

Re: Shelby GT500KR
I'd like to see pic.'s as well!!
When ever I hear of a story like this wether its about a Car, Boat or Real Estate. I always think of the seller as the person that really got taken avantage of. I don't care if the seller only wanted "X" amount for the _____ - somebody took them for a ride. I know....."Buyer and seller, beware" But still!! |

That is absolutely correct. my father had one and sold it in the mid 1980s. there were only about 900 built and i'd say that car is worth well over 100K we still have a GT500(white with blue lemans stripes) and it has 70K original miles...we get 80K offers all the time for this car... |

Re: Shelby GT500KR
I think you guys think this car is worth a little more than it really is. Still a really nice find. This car is in unrestored condition. If Barrett Jackson can get 200k for one, I guess I should buy the two that are advertised at traderonline.com that have been restored and let them sell them, then I could buy me a heck of a nice boat with the profits. One listed has 64k miles and has been restored and he is only asking 99k for it.
I ran across a pretty rough 68 GT350 in a guys back yard a few years ago. The guy won't even talk about selling it and won't do anything with it either. What a waste. Told me he had already turned down a Million Dollars for it. |
Re: Shelby GT500KR
go to www.carsinbarns.com you will be very suprised how many are still rotting away out there.

Re: Shelby GT500KR
Alrighty,
The car was purchased in Ithaca NY. Apparently, as the story was told to me, an extremely wealthy (millions) gentleman purchased this car for his son. They were originally planning on restoring the car to 100%. However, it seems as though the son had no interest in partaking in the project whatsoever. As a result the car has been sitting and sitting and........ Since that time ,the young man was given a Ferrari (not sure what model) which he apparently has taken a liking to. I guess thats not saying much for the son's mentality. When Paul inquired about the car the seller told him he would sell the car on one condition - the deal had to be cash. That seemed a bit strange to me but what do I know. As far as pics are concerned, I did not have my camera with me when I looked at the car. I can tell you that the car is Blue in color and the stripes on the sides of the car are white. The interior is black in color and has a woodgrain dash. Inside the engine compartment there is a Shelby Emblem about half way up the inside quarter panel. I will try to get picks as the car has been "moved" for safe keeping. Remember fella's, I did not post this thread to gain anything accept to share a little info I thought everybody would enjoy. p.s. A little more info. Paul was notified about this find through a mutual friend. I called him and asked why the hell he didn't give me the tip he said " I didn't think you be interested in a Mustang". $#^%#@&!^!!!! |

Re: Shelby GT500KR
This particular car was manufactured in Jeresy. You will notice the LeMans on the Valve cover. From what I understand very few were produced with this particular engine option. It is an upgraded 428 used for racing. I've been told it is right around 450 h.p. . The standard 428 were in the upper 300's. Actually this motor (from what I've been told) was a nightmare for Ford. Many of them were back to the dealer within weeks of purchase. If infact this motor has never been opened I guess it adds more value to the car.
In the first set of pics you can see specs and scratches on the hood. Can you imagine this piece of history being a daily driver. I guess back then, who knew. My buddy told me it was purchased new by a police officer. On Monday, if the car is still at this location, I'm going to get a few more pics. As usuall, right when I need my digital, the damn battery took a flop. If anyboddy would like any shots in particular, let me know. I don't know what it is, but looking at this classic is very easy to do. It's cool that the thing has been untouched for almost 40 years. |
Re: Shelby GT500KR
Cool find. What is with the 'Eleanor' name? Just from the original 'Gone in 60 Seconds' movie from the early 70's?
A similar story sort of. In my younger school days, used to stay the summer at my G-Parents and play with some neighbor girls there. Their dad owned a '63 split window and was his daily driver. (Remember this was some 20yrs ago) Being a teenager, I thought it was a cool car. A few yrs ago had to return there for a family funeral and was walking around and seen he still had this Vette, but he had since died. His wife parked it under a lean too many yrs ago and it has sat since. It looked like it was sunk up to it's axles in dirt. What a shame to see these cars in those conditions. |
Re: Shelby GT500KR
F'in sweet NtS  What a piece of history to stumble on! :evilb: :evilb:
Thanks!!! :drink: Any more pics you can get would be appreciated ... maybe a full profile showing that gorgeous fastback and beautiful lines of that baby .... |
Re: Shelby GT500KR
around the corner from me a high school friends dad has a
1970 Dodge Challenger R/T Convertible 440 Six-Pack/Tourqeflite TracPac I've seen the window sticker My research at one time showed it one of six in this combo last I knew...about 8K miles He ordered the car, drag raced it on and off for 3-4 years in the early 70's, and has driven it very little on the street since then. Last I knew it still has the original top on it, as it has been in clean/dry storage all it's life. It's been sitting too long mechanically...but You can imagine the offers he's turned down. I've heard as much as 125K...for what was a $4500 car. He will not sell it. His wife got pissed once about 3 years ago and put it in the local paper for 16K. Yep, I called on it! "the car is not for sale" |
Re: Shelby GT500KR
Probably one of the few survivors out there. Nice catch!

Re: Shelby GT500KR
Sorry for the misinformation. I'm just relaying. I know very little about the classic muscle of yester yea. Apparently so does my source  Thank for posting the correct info.

I mentioned the dicrepency about the location of assembly and he still feels that the car was assembled in Metuchen, New Jersey. He told me that the "T" after the 8 in the vin represents this assembly plant according to paper work that he recieved with the car (which could very well be incorrect. Looks like a copy). I mentioned the little detail about the sticker on the air intake. He wasn't sure about that, but did mention he spoke with the origanal owner of the vehicle whom stated that everything was origanal on the car as purchased....except the emblem on the dash. All very small details, but still very interesting nonetheless. Did you here about production numbers on the 06"? I read in MotorTrend that the price range should be around the 45'ish mark. Not bad for 450h.p. Maybe I'll park one in my garage. |

I'm in no way a Ford expert, but here's my $0.02.
I have seen a few KRs in the $35k- 5oK range in the past few years. Verts go in the $50K-$80k range and Verts w AC w stick go w concours restos go for $100K+\ All the same, they are Way cool The GT350s still kill it at the track |

The big difference between the 428 found in the GT500 and the 428 CJ in the GT500KR was the 428 CJ had the 427 low riser cylinder heads/intake manifold (there were other minor differences, too). As for those 'Le Mans' rocker covers...you see them on the 428's in the GT500 all the time (the GT500 was not ram air so it got the Cobra open element air cleaner along with them). They were also an over the counter parts option for dress up. They do not mean the engine is some special 450 HP Le Mans racing engine. Cool car!!...especially since there were only around 1,000 (give or take) hard tops built that year :) I've been an avid Ford FREAK since I was 13. Had a chance to buy a 66 Hertz in 1985 for $6600 and passed. Duh! Someone please post the VIN as I cannot see the pics. Love to research this in the Shelby Registry. |
Re: Shelby GT500KR
Ford Data tag
1968 Vin breakdown is as follows: 1st digit - (8) year of production 2nd - (T) Ford assembly plant ... all 1968 Shelby's were built in Metuchen NJ 3rd - (02) body style ... this would be a 03 if convert 4th - Engine code ... J-302, S-428, R-428CJ 5th - Consecutive production number FYI only 318 KR convert's in 68 |
