what is a rough guess of tongue weight?? pulling with 2500 Ram

Probably about 900 or so.... No problem for a HD Mopar.. :drink:

General rule of thumb is 7 - 10 % for boat trailers and 10 - 12 % for travel trailers,, so you coud be as low as 700 or as high as 1,000...

guessing at something like towing a 10,000 boat with an undersized vehicle is the express route to meeting your insurance adjustor- or surgeon. have it weighed.

We sold all sled stuff last year. SRX's, leathers, enclosed trailer. I'll go out West and rent if I get the itch.

Every trailer is different and there's the possibility that the trailer you have isn't specifically made for your boat. There's also the possibility that it isn't sized correctly. These things can make a big difference. Alot of times, these differences seem slight when towing on smooth, level roads. I can tell you from experience just how fast things can make a downward turn. I rolled a 34 Scarab over an embankment- a combination of a truck at its max tow weight, a less-than-ideal trailer and going too fast on an unfamiliar road- it started downhill and I misjudged a curve. That coupled with some traffic and a couple of nice sized potholes right off the edge and a couple of sharp corrections mushroomed into one hell of a mess. Close enough just wasn't.

After almost killing myself using a small truck to pull a big boat, I bought a Freightliner FL70. Can't even feel the Apache back there. I haven't even bothered to hook up the electric brakes on the trailer. A used one cost me half of what my Excursion did. Just wish it had a crew cab.

Thanks for all replies and I don't mean any sarcasm. Just having fun. :D

I have a new Myco which I upgraded from the cheap Vanguard with Carlyle :mad: (can't spell there cheap chit tires).

Trailer is made for the exact hull bottom. Sits on all bunk pads evenly-perfect. The electric over hydralic brake system is the cat's ass (deep vee's ass)

1000lbs is ok for estimate. Getting over 2000 would worry me.

Last wise crack...Should have bought a Peterbilt 330 or 335.

Them Freight Shakers are like a Vanguard trailer.

I sold new Pete's for 12yrs till 2002. In my early 20's I also drove 18 wheeler's coast to coast. Also pulled doubles and in FL pulled a 10' wide trailer with D-7 dozer with blade that hung 14' wide>>>HAMMER DOWN in the boogie lane-thru downtown Orlando.

Now I just enjoy poking along.

I looked at a crew cab Pete 330 all decked out with toolboxes. It was more than I paid for the boat plus I'd have needed a CDL. Nice ride, though. The FL is definitely not a Pete or KW, hell it's not even an International. It was too cheap to pass up. I put a flat bed and a 5K crane on it as well as underbody boxes and two big toolboxes up top. It really tows sweet, though.

42" '86 pleasure with full cabin. My Excursion diesel pulls it but it's more like the boat pushes the truck sometimes. It's OK around town but not great on the highway. Last fall on I-76, some A/H went across the median and into oncoming traffic on a big curve- I saw him in time and made a quick cut inside of him. I went halfway into the median at about 65 or so. He went on my right side and hit the car I was passing. I whipped right up on the road and got stopped- all while pulling the Apache.

This thread has made me start thinking about all the close calls I've had on the highway- with and without the boat. I think I'm going to get a waterfront place and a hydrohoist!

Lets not forget that Downtown's new boat is actually a 38 footer... so make your wieght estimates accordingly. :D :D :D


Although, the beak does hang out there quite a ways... probably adds to the toungue weight. :drink:

I have a couple of friends that have the mentality that since they have a bigger truck they dont need brakes on the trailer.

Im glad you dont think like they do. im just waiting for them to plow somebody or something.
