Ford Excursion Question

My friend is getting a 2005 Excursion Diesel. He tows approx 6000 lbs and I remember seeing something about gear ratios on this board. Which is the preferred gears to order?

Thanks

Re: Ford Excursion Question

In my 2000 Excursion I had 3:73 gears and pulled my 10k 37 Active thunder great, but if he wants to really pull something bigger one day the 4:10 gears are better for heavy loads.

6000 lbs. I would go with the 3:73 and get good fuel mileage.

Do they even offer any other gears on the the excursion than 3:73? If so, it is a recent development. 6000 is nothing for the 3:73.

All you can get is the 3:73. The 4:10 is in the F350 PU. The stock gears are plenty up to 11,000lbs. I would worry more about getting a sway bar, air bags and V code springs up front. The first two are a must. Keep it in OD and let the tranny do its job, unless you shift in and our a lot don't touch the button. The truck is a tow monster, i have the edge juice turned down to 70hp, 100lbs tq and I pull all hills in OD with 10,000lbs. I assume it is the 6.0, do a VIN search and see if there was any work done to it like a reflash. I have the 7.3 and would not trade it for two 6.0s.

Thanks,
Its a brand new truck from a dealer so we dont need a vin# check. So the 373's arewhat comes standard? No option needed?

Mitch, Did you see a big difference with the Edge? I installed the Edge / Attitude on my 7.3 and did not see a bit of difference in any of the 5 settings? I have driven some 6.0's and there is a HUGE difference !!! Tire smoking difference. Dave
