4.30 Limited Slip on '06 Ford Dually
 

Looking at a loaded 2006 PSD, 4X4 with 4.30 ratio.

What can I expect with the 4.30 ratio with regard to day to day driving, pulling, and gas mileage?

I was looking for a 4.10 ratio, but this truck has everything! Currently using a GMC Yukon XL with 496 and 4.10 ratio... does a good job.

Pulling a 40' Hustler with twins (~10,000 pounds), add the trailer and gear and I get pretty heavy fast.

Thoughts on the Ford?

truck will be fine... make sure you have a good hitch on there, ford has their head up their azz on some of the hitches they put on their trucks...

i would of guessed that 40 hustler weigh more than that....

i have 3.73's in my crew cab 4x4 and get 17-18 MPG everyday empty... i get 12-14 pulling about 7k boat/trailer....

This one has the 15K hitch upgrade.

I added a Titon hitch to my Yukon XL for added capacity.

Anyone else with input? Seems like most trucks are either 4.10 or 3.73. I do like the limited slip differential option.

a friend of mine has a 550 the same way 9 in town or highway loaded or not the same good luck :eek:

I test drove a 250 SuperCrew Lariat with the V10 and 4.30's WOW. I think you could pull a house down with it. It is a pure baddass pulling machine. I can't imagine what kind of power it would have with a PSD in it.

Hate to be a predjuice prick here but if you can afford a 40ft hustler, and new truck then I think the gas mileage is not an issue.

I would love to have one but I drive 500-700 miles a week and the 150 King Ranch I have is pushing it on the gas mileage factor.

Gas mileage was/is not the biggest factor for me. I can probably find a truck with 4.10 ratio through the internet/dealer. I like this particular truck, but had not had 4.30 ratio and wanted information.

Tow rating is the same for all three available gears (15,000 lbs each).

Was not sure if the truck would top out at 65 mph or have any other issues that I should be aware of. Will re-sale suffer with 4.30?

With that said, 9 mpg stinks! But then again, we all have boats!

Don't know about the new 06, but here is what I have for comparision.

2002 F350 Dually 7.3 PSD w/ 4.10 Rear End 4 x 4

Pulling 36 Foot Baja Outlaw on Myco Trailer (12,000 lbs w/ fuel & gear)

15 MPG best non-towing
10-11 MPG towing

I tow in overdrive all the way with the 4.10 and it is all the gear I have needed. Truck has 48,000 miles and 30,000 have been pulling the boat around the East coast.

Probably the 4.10 would be all you would need with the new 6.0. The 4.30 would be awesome but I would look hard into the mileage, and what RPM range it is at around say 75 MPH.

4.30 would be food if you did nothing but pull with it. I'd say it's too low for empty daily driving..

I got 6-7mpgs pulling 18,000 with a '00 7.3 and 4.10 4x4.
The new PSD is better, but you're still looking at a 12mpg empty ride.

I sell these trucks at a local Ford dealer. The 4:10 is plenty. The 4:30 (called a Tow Boss Package) increases your towing to 19,500 which would be over kill for you. I would think you'd want the 4:10 also to save a bit at the pump. I can locate a truck for you with my locator. Call me at work anytime, 810-721-3203.

If you want to go to a diesel for gas mileage reasons that really doesn't work. The improvement in gas mileage is offset by the investment cost.

The diesel pulling a load like that might get 12-13 mpg. The gas gets 9 mpg? Diesel fuel costs more than regular gas at this point, so your savings it not that much.

If you want more power buy a Hypertech or Predator tuner for about $ 300. These will give you about 5-10% more torque/hp. These engines also respond to an exhaust system. I put a Flowmaster dual in dual out w/ twin pipes and picked up about a 0.5 mpg on the highway and better response.
