I just cant ever believe those guys that say they are gettin 16 mpg pulling 10,000 pounds. I dont believe it..

Re: OT: 2500 HD vs Avalanche 2500 Pros/Cons?
Maybe the just dont know the accurate weight,I weighed mine on a scale and use a gps to figure milage.... The thing thats silly is all the new diesels pull well, the dont have to fudge on the facts ,they are still awesome trucks... :D

I flew to Pennsylvania to look at my boat before I bought it and the seller(sorry buddy) drove like a mad man! He had a new chevy van with a 496 and small tires with 4-10 gears and that thing hauled ass,we were going 90 mph the second we left the airport. When he hooked up to the boat it pulled awesome, except for the speed , I never thought he would be able to stop going that fast ... It was really impressive!

I have also ran different tires that were about 10% taller and they wack 1 1/2 mpg off overall taking into account covering 10 % error in the speedo. One thing that hasn't been mentioned in defense of the gassers is ANY diesel takes a 10-15% hit in the mileage during winter between motor running rich, warm up times and winter blended fuel. My 02 and 04 duramaxes both could barely break 15 mpg empty on highway during 10-20degree weather when running winter blended fuel,Smitty
If I were to slow down, I would get 14-15 at 65 mph. Wannabe |
Re: OT: 2500 HD vs Avalanche 2500 Pros/Cons?
Wannabe, are you 3.73 or 4.10. If I could actually get 14 with an 8.1, I would get real serious about a used Av. I just don't think it is realistic w/ the 4.10's that I need to reach 12k towing capacity. I've searched the towing forums as well as OSO and 10-11 seems to be the norm with the 8.1. I find that hard to swallow. Maybe I'm crazy, but I have more confidence buying a used gas engine versus a used diesel because they are a lot cheaper and I'm not worried that it has had a 150hp chip in the friggen thing all it's life and towed 20,000 pounds all over the earth. You can find a nice low mileage 2500 Av for 20k or less these days. I'm thinking I may need to continue driving my car everyday and buy a truck for towing and weekends. I guess I have 7 months to worry about it now!

Funny how performance boaters talk about gas mileage, diesel vs gas and forget that the boat they are pulling uses more fuel in a day than the truck would in a week!
Accounting 101 should also teach us that the number one expense in owning a vehicle isn't the cost of fuel or insurance but rather the DEPRECIATION of the vehicle. Buying $100 week in fuel is still cheaper than the depreciation on the new truck one year later. Just my thoughts....... |

At 80 mph about 2700 rpm ( 29.6 mph per 1000 rpm in OD). I have a 12,000 lb rated towing capacity. The 3.73 axle saves a little on gas mileage but the towing capacity drops to 10,500 (I think). The 2500 Avalanches are hard to find, mine was on a lot. BTW they cost really no more than the 1500's, mine has cloth seats, sunroof, XM, etc list of $ 41k. Wannabe |
Re: OT: 2500 HD vs Avalanche 2500 Pros/Cons?
My 2002 2500 Avalanche got 14.3 on a trip from TN to Detroit with the 3.73 rear end. Did the 510 miles on one tank, with a third of the trip going through the hills and mountains of TN and KY. My current 03 with 4.10 gets around 13.5 on the highway and 12 right now in mixed city/hwy.
