I dont care how balanced your trailer is, and the posi rear end, ive tried it at steep wet ramps in 2wd just out of curiousity and cant move mine. ive seen little boats having problems. steep ramps, mildew and water all over them = you might need it.

You may have been lucky but I will never own a boat tow vehicle without 2wd.

What are you thinking??? Get the 4x4!

I can't tell you how many 2x4 trucks I've seen bald a tire on a wet ramp.

Get the 4x4. Plus most two wheel drive trucks look like $hit. :D

I pull a little boat compared to most here (20ft) and I have a 4 wheel drive Explorer. W are thinking new tow vehicle and was really gonna go 4x2 with posi , I even stopped putting it in 4 wheel drive to test my theory that I didn't need it....and 99% of the time I don't. Then a couple weeks ago was Captiva and there was hurricane coming so the only ramp (which does admittedly suk) was packed with everyone pulling their boats out. I pulled three 4x2 trucks and boats stuck on the ramp up while I waited my turn......decision made, next truck will be 4 wheel drive. You get some $ on resale anyhow.

I was originally convinced that I did not need 4wd so I bought a dually without. It would have been alot cheaper to have purchased the right truck to begin with. Maybe everyone does not need 4wd for their application but I wish I had listened to others when I made this decision.

I am pulling a 9000# dry Fountain on a triple axle alum trailer

I should clarify that I use an SUV to tow, not a pickup. Wonder if a SUV just has more traction than a pickup due to more weight over the rear axle?
I think your boat is a little heavier than a 30-33' and I can see why you'd want 4wd. Fountains are heavy generally in the rear, plus the low gearing will help a lot in pulling out.
The only ramp I know of around here that's tough to get out of is Barkley's...now that's steep!!! But all of the state park ramps I've used around the cumming, buford area are fine. So, looks like one will have to consider the boat weight and the ramp they're using...but for me and my boat I don't need 4wd.

A SUV will definatelly be an improvement. They have additional soundproofing, glass, seats, and many have rear air units which add to the weight over the axle.

I use Lanier Beach South and the issue is not that it is a steep ramp but that it gets slick and tends to get a lot of pine needles. I can get to where I am almost inches from the top of the ramp and just need a little more.

You also have to consider how long before you step up in boat size and how long you plan to keep your truck.

I have pulled my boat to Thompson Creek and launched and loaded it with a friend's 2500 2wd Sub without an issue. The ramps and conditions make a difference.
