As far as proof, in civil court and arbitration it's preponderance of evidence. The mere fact that you made modifications to dramatically increase the power output of an engine is likely to resonate with most reasonable people. In your case, having a friendly dealer is nice but if you smoke a diesel, it's not going to be up to him. It will be up to a Ford tech rep. Having a close friend as a service manager couldn't get me out of a jam on two different occasions. The TR said no- that was it. Fortunately they were a couple hundred bucks. In the end, if you can afford the consequences you shouldn't be worried about them. |
Re: 2005 Excursion 4wd PSD
All right guys thanks for the info on the engine hp tips but what about hitches and air bags and other stuff to pull a bigger boat? Do I really need to do anything to pull a 38?
I'll wait for the warranty to end before I modify the engine just to make sure I'm covered. I can see the point that it is up to the TR to prove it is not your fault but I don't want that headache. |

There is a change up front from leaf to coil on the '05. You're going to find overall the Ex is a bit mushy and it gets worse when you load it up. I've replaced all the suspension on my '04 with Superduty hardware. It's a couple inches taller (now it looks like a real truck, not mom's giant station wagon) and it rides/handles 100% better than stock. You can likely do the same thing with '05 superduty parts. Ford's stock shocks aren't too hot. I bought Edelbrocks and love them but there are lots of good one's out there. Instant ride/handling improvement. Air bags are a must- not so much for the static load but trailering something of that size is going to squash the back end down on rolling dips and big bumps- sometimes enough to be a little scary. I'm not certain but I don't believe they added a rear sway bar for '05 but a Hellwig made a big difference in mine. The hitch needs to be replaced with a class V.

Where can I find a call V hitch. I checked a few places but since the Ex is no longer being made no one seems to have parts already. Someone has to have parts laying around from an 04 I would that most parts would fit an 05. The truck already has after market shocks on it, Edelbrocks. Air bags? Where, who and what type (if there are any) to get? Installation is it hard? |

All I can add is I have a 2003 Excursion with the 6.0 D and its all bone stock. From the factory it had a class IV hitch, I am using a 10,000 # ball, I tow a 38' Powerquest that dry is 7,800 #, With a 2,0003 trailer and with gas and stuff I am guessing I am at about 11'000 #.
I have no problem towing at 70 MPH down the road but there are times on some curves and in the wind when I take it down a notch as she gets a little loose. I believe if I boosted the shocks I would be fine, just haven't done it yet. I might be moving up to a 43 Black Thunder, now with that I could have issues on a long haul. 33l |

Performancemary,
That is a great looking rig. Thanks for the tips. The BT is my ultimate dream boat but if and when I get one I would have to get a F550 to be safe but that is a lot of truck to just drive around town and trailer once in awhile. But that would be the set up. :D :drink: itilldo |

I can't imagine Ford changed their tooling for a major component like a frame just for '05 so all years should fit. I'm guessing that both of these manufacturers have a tech line that can steer you to the right fitment and a supplier. Firestone makes the Ride-Rite bag system. How hard the installation is depends on your skills and tools. Not a tough job but would probably take an afternoon. Pretty much a bolt-on job. They bolt to the side of the frame and to the top of the axle. You can either do the simple Schrader valve for the bags or an onboard pump and a cab switch which is more time and money. I always recommend someone do their own work if possible. If the first time you ever slide under the truck is with a flashlight at an interstate rest stop, the likelihood of you getting back and going is alot less. Plus, rarely have I ever been satisfied with the quality of work and attention to detail after paying someone else to do the work for me. Again, a rubbed-thru line is going to present a problem on the highway with your boat attached and the cabin filled with crying kids and a pi$$ed-off wife. You probably don't need this stuff to pull your boat but it's damn cheap insurance. |

The stock Ex rides a bit nose-down and they have a habit of being wanderers on the road. The SD springs and rear blocks cures the problem. The stock front spring is a negative curve piece and I have been told this contributes to the wander. The extra height allowed me to put 315/70r 17's on it (H2 size) which fill the wheel wells much better. Very minor trimming to the bottom of the plastic inner fenders all the way at the bottom was all that was needed. |
