Converting Brakes
 

Can anyone tell me how hard it is to convert a drum system to disc brakes. My current set up is shot, so if I need a rebuild, I may convert the system. Any suppliers would be helpful also. Thanks

You should be able to take all the bolts of the backing plate,remove entire drum system.All you need is to know what axles you have and or trailer brand name.Axles are generic.do a search for trailer parts there are plenty.While your at it purchase an electric /hydraulic system for 600 bucks.Youll never be sorry.

Drum brake couplers need to have the valve punctured to relieve the residual line pressure that is needed in a drum brake application in order to be used for a disc brake application. As was mentioned, an ice pick will do this 'modification' :cool:

410-573-9776 Ask for Scott. If you go ele/hyd you will need to change the coupler to a solid one. If you go with brakes on 2 axles it can be do with a drum brake coupler if you go for 3 axles you'll need a larger cap/vol coupler.

Extreme trailers quoted me $1,400+ to convert 2 axles from hydraulic to electric/hydraulic. This included everything and the controller. This price seemed high to me.

Since you are redoing your brakes, I would check into the electric/hydraulic as mentioned earlier.

I converted my brakes to electric / hydralic and converted from drum to disk 3 axles i also had a solid coupler welded on this was the best thing that i have done for the trailer

About 2 years ago, I converted my tri-axle trailer from drum to disc. I bought the disc conversion kits from Northern Tools for $100ea. This kit comes with stainless steel hub with bearings, lines and all hardware to mount them. So for 2 axles it cost me $400
I did not have to change anything on my hydralic coupler except the directions said to punch a hole in the end of the brake reservoir when switching from drum to disc.
I also added a solenoid for backing. Total cost ot the conversion was about $500. It worked great.
Another great place to buy trailer parts, that I have found, is
REDNECK trailer parts. I believe they are nationwide. There is one near my house. I bought a tire,rim combination cheaper from them than I could by just the rim from anyone else.
