65' Vette/automatic choke sticking problem

Okay, what I thought was a clogged fuel filter now appears to be the automatic choke is sticking closed. Holley carb.

Took the air cleaner off and the throttle/butterfly valve was closed. Hitting the accelerator does not open it. There is this little red gizmo coming out of the "choke body" (plastic section on side of the carb) that seems to be the connecting rod to the rod that runs up to that throttle valve. If I push the little red gizmo down with my finger the throttle valve opens up about one quarter, maybe one third. It would appear that would be it's normal position. As soon as I hit the accelerator the throttle valve springs back into closed position, i.e., the choke is now "on".

My shop service manuals have not arrived yet. I've fiddled with it but not really getting anywhere. Anybody got any ideas???
