what is your winch post mounted to?
I'm looking for pictures showing your trailer tonque, winch post mount, and trailer jack mount.
Why, if you care to read: I just replaced the winch post on my boat trailer, because it had a crack near the support. I ordered one significantly stronger than i needed, because it wasn't that much more money. When installing it i took a look at how it was mounted, and wasn't too pleased. It's clamped to a 3"x3" square tube which is clamped to two pieces of angle iron which are in turn bolted to the frame, with rather small bolts. If i get in an accident, i believe the angle iron will bend or break, the 3"x3" tube will spear the hull, and the whole enchilada will stop somewhere in the back of my truck. It's a magic tilt trailer. I'm thinking about changing that setup by removing that whole piece as well as the 3"x3" tube that the coupler mounts to, and replacing it with a longer 3"x4" tube that will run from the coupler, through the front of the trailer where it will be securely bolted, back a few more feet to where it will be clamped to a piece of angle bolted to the trailer. I will likely reuse the angle that's there already, the difference will be instead of being clamped to angle iron at both ends, the tube the winch post mounts to will be clamped weakly at one end and bolted securely at the other end, with the coupler/ brake actuator connected to the same member. I will also have to re-mount the trailer jack, and i'm thinking about cutting the flange off it, cutting holes in the top and bottom of the new tongue/winch post mount (behind where it bolts to the top of the "A" of the trailer) and welding the jack in there. I want to see how other trailers are set up to get an idea of whether this would be normal, overkill, not enough, etc. I'm dealing with a 5500 lb boat here, not as much as some others, but not a jet ski either. |
Re: what is your winch post mounted to?
Eagle trailer. Hard to tell by the picture, but the winch stand clamps around the 3x4 tube. The jack bolts to a 1/4" plate that makes up the "A"

Re: what is your winch post mounted to?
Thanks
I went to the boat show in detroit today and looked at a lot of the trailers. they are all set up with the winch post clamped to the same beam as the coupler, or the winch post is clamped to a beam that is welded in securely. None as flimsy as mine. looks like i'll order that tube and set it up safely. |
Re: what is your winch post mounted to?
Mine was set up similarly;i put a diamond plate 1/4" plate over the whole deal(center tube, main trailer rails, etc.) its seems to have integrated the whole assembly. I have my safety chains attached to the whole plated assembly as opposed to just the winch post. Hope this helps- Jeff

Re: what is your winch post mounted to?
I have a Magictilt too(mdl# TML2882). Mine had the same crack by the sound of it. I replaced it with on that looks like Cudas. Got it from Sealion , a local trailer manufacturer. Works great now
