Most of it was created by erosion by the Colorado. Before all the dams, the river was very red with iron ore sand in it. So it was not only water erosion but also sand erosion which escalated the rate and caused the huge canyons. Wind blowing the sand also contributed. Now because of the dams, the river backs up in Powel, Mead, Mojave, Havasu, etc. This allows the sand to settle out and the water is very clear, no longe red. The enviros hate it and want to have all the dams removed and bring the river back to it's original condition. But the dams give us hydro power, water control and, of course, awsome boating!

The slick rock of Moab is anything but slick. It is like driving on sand paper and up get incredable traction. Great for rock crawling but hard on the driveline! I've been 4X4ing and mountain biking there and there is no other place like it (maybe the moon?!).
