Duramax LLY upgrades

Ok, I want to know what the BEST intake & exhaust upgrades for a LLY Duramax would be. I have a programmer already, but think I'll be getting an Edge juice with additude.
What have you done & how does it perform?

Dangit! Questioins like this are a no win.

Just gave him the normal names that seem to be preferred. AFE, True Flo, MBRP, Banks, Magnaflo, Dynomax, and so on.

Not everyone of these products fits into every person's budget. I try to feel out the client and see what meet's their needs within their budget.

Did I do a good job of dodging the question? :D

Buck...I guess the warranty is void after you do this stuff correct????....anyway....how much power can one get out of a new duramax.....bernies rig???....plus it needs air ride all the way around...kershner air ride..or something....torque ....I am a torque monster

buck183 05-01-2006 10:43 PM

Re: Duramax LLY upgrades

Wow, the "warranty" question. Ranks right up there with taxes for me. :)

I ALWAYS tell a customer the warranty is between them and the servicing dealer. All dealers have a different take on different items. My local GM dealer could care less. Put almost whatever you want on it and he'll take care of it if there's a problem. Go to the GM dealer in the next town and he will freak if you put aftermarket wheels on a Duramax.

In short, this is a VERY gray area IMO. Open communication with the dealer is what I recommend.

I personally don't have any issues with my dealers that my customers have to worry about.

Air Ride...I have access to Firestone. None of my distributors carry the brand you mentioned BM. Sorry.

Power gains....This should be in the 15-25 hp range. This is what I consider a realistic number. I won't balloon this number to make a sale to someone. For the most part the intake and exhaust are usually added to compliment a tuner or chip. In this scenerio the gains are substantial to say the least.

I don't have any dyno data to give out realistic torque numbers on just an exhaust and intake upgrade.

I do however have a full dyno run on a brand new 2006 Cummins in stock form and running the new Triple Dog by Bully Dog. A customer agreed to have his truck guinea pigged to do some tuning with a local manufacturer's chip. He took the opportunity to get some numbers on his Triple Dog while he was there. Unfortunately the numbers I have on the sheet are all HP numbers and no torque. :(

Byrdman.
You need to check out http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/index.php
Lots of good info there.

The LB7 was the first generation Dmax. It was replaced by the LLY which has been recently replaced by the LBZ. The current rumor has GM Upgrading the engine again in 07. I had very good luck with my 01 LB7 Dmax and recently traded it for an 06 LBZ with a six speed Allison.

Looks like a killer rig. My knowledge is very limited on these trucks. Lots of lurking on truck forums helped me make my decision to buy a GM. I had zero problems with my 01 Chevy LB7 Dmax. I traded it in with 89,000 miles and the only thing I ever did to the truck was change the fluids and filters. Even the brakes were still original. I love the Dmax and can't say enough about the smoothness of the Allison.

Unfortunately what you are looking at is totally different from my 2500 HD. You need to get opinions from 4500 owners. I am not sure what things are done differently on the 4500. I would put a post on the Diesel Place asking for opinions. Let them know the build date of the truck so they can figure out which engine is in the truck. They will be able to help.

Re: Duramax LLY upgrades

what are you trying to accomplish with it a good tow rig or flat out a runner? If a tow rig and want to change settings then a programmer like a quadzilla or edge module will get you there. For exhaust I would highly reccomend the mbrp and for an intake if you want the turbo whistle to be louder look at an intake kit with the metal/aluminum tube with a cold air box surrounding the surround. if no turbo whistle is in the plans then get a green filter or swiss cheese the stock airbox. As for warrenty just be smart and take the programmer off most times they dont care if you are good with the service guy and are consistent that is always a loaded question on the warrrentys. My service guy with my rig has no problems with what is done to it and its a lot more than a programmer and exhaust.

ok...yea yea....lots of turbo whistle :D ...I am gonna run this thing out!

what is the overdrive bolt on unit i saw somewhere here???I am doing 2700 at 75....all other shifts bang out at 3300...maybe it has a governor or is tapped???the transfer case is seperate from the trans....someone said there is a unit for overdrive for allison trans....2005 model..

JasonSmith 05-16-2006 04:29 PM

Re: Duramax LLY upgrades

Byrdman, the bolt on is made by Gear-Vendors. I looked on their site & they don't show a model for the Allison.
Try a 2 speed rear end or a bigger wheel tire combo.
No homo jokes f*ckers!

Byrdman 05-16-2006 10:30 PM

Yes....they do not...and have nothing coming......also..I can not hop it up cause medium duty truck computors and sensors for everything are different from light duty ....I will look into the 2 speed rear.....got any ideas like gear vendors....so i can keep it simple???....I really need to go faster than 75.....on the highyways it is killing me....I am stuck in the flow of traffic and sometimes have to go to the right .....2 speed rear....I will find it if they make it....great idea!

They are quite popular in the RV towing world. You should be able to find one without too much trouble.

JasonSmith 05-17-2006 04:39 PM

Re: Duramax LLY upgrades

Why not get really simple & change the gears in the rear end. Isn't that truck set up with a dump bed or something? It might have some big a$$ gears in it right now.
I'd go that way or find a bigger tire/wheel combonation.

Byrdman 05-17-2006 06:41 PM

Re: Duramax LLY upgrades

yes....what does it mean when it seems like you have a injector rapping...some blue smoke....then goes away....then when it is sitting there idling....there is a clicking noise....coming from within..deep....some say it is the same noise that the oil port issues in the first lbz??2 different issues....anyway that did not take long for me to have a warranty issue...this is probably why the previous owner dumped it...but there was no claims ....when I was going to the dealership it started pinging like....bad injector....then let a real damaging bang go  ...after that it ran fine....i think it is mis firing a injector...not loading.....then loading to much......????

The truck is 4x4....with hauler bed....I would go for a 2 speed rear if it could be done...since I am the only driver...I do not want bigger tires...there no good for towing...plus it will be a eyesore for everyday use...it has 519 gears

Hey Jason I am a service manager for GM I currently own a 2004 duramax with the lly engine. if you have ever looked at a performance exhaust system there really is nothing ti it. from gm they take the stock muffler and reduce it to 2 1/4 pipe internally and then back to 3" when it leave for noise purposes. I went ahead and removed the stock muffler and welded in a straight pipe in place of the muffler and then took the tailpipe and rerouted to drop down in frt of the rear bumper. then took the stock air box and ported it out with a 1/2" drill and installled a k&n air filter and what a difference. i have not installed a programmer yet but just by doing these small upgrades i improved fuel economy in town to 18.2 city and 22.3 highway. the truck is 4wd with 35" tires and a 6" lift. the speedo is 10mph slow but the truck performs like a bat out of hell. if this is any help dont spend the cash if you dont have two. also the company i work for uses automotive fuel additives made by bg petrospecs the fuel additive is called 248 and it makes another difference.here is california we have issues with our fuels and the 248 puts back in what they take out before it makes it into our tanks.

I did the Edge w/ ati , AFE, MBRP,Its a kick in the azz.Wish I had done it whe it was new .

As far a warranty there a thread on the Diesel site that there was a law suit against Chevy saying it did not void the warranty ,but its going to be a pain and cost ya if ya need it.

I towed in 3 and it gets close to 1350 ,if it does it will defuel so its not going to hurt anything anyway

I am selling my Edge Attitude chip for a Duramax LLY (2004.5 thru 2005). The chip is GREAT, I am just changing it to a programmed ECM chip for the better MPG only. I don't need this much extra HP. (damn that just doesn't sound right...)
