Can turning a trailer to sharp screw up bearings?
I just recently purchased a boat with a tri-axle trailer. I tried to back it into my driveway and had the trailer jack knifed pretty sharp and I towed it last weekend around 60 miles and a wheel bearing went. Before I left I greased all 6 hubs.
The trailer came from salt water and not knowing the maintenance on it I changed all of the bearings today for piece of mind. Another bearing would have failed soon as it fell apart when removed but the others looked good but I changed them anyway. The boat was brought to me in Ohio from North Carolina without a problem so either I just had bad luck on my first time out or I was wondering if backing real tight could cause a problem. Cordell |

I can't see how. Most likely the bearings were shot anyhow and the failure was just bad timing.
My trailer is a dual axle and I make sharp 90+ degree turns pulling it out, and backing it into my driveway. Been doing this for 4 seasons now with no failures. But then I don't run in salt water. If I did, my bearings stand a good chance of sucking in water after driving, I'd bring a grease gun and give them a few shots before hitting the road. |

i do sharp turns every weekend and knock on wood no problems yet, but i only dip in salt once or twice a year and i also carry a grease gun and give them a shot before i hit the road.

I've had dual axles and trips. Sharp turns with that third axles really seems to stress the forward most wheel. Not sure if it caused your problem, but sharp turns look hard on the bearings.

I doubt it. The thrust loads and stresses experinced are pretty low for the roller bearings used....it looks worse than it is really is because the tires flex and roll under. If I knew a typical bearing number I could tel you what the thrust load max was....I bet it si way under the friction of the tires

Outer Cup L44610 Inner Bearing L68149 Inner Cup L68111 I also have another question that you might be able to answer. On the front axle with the brake drums the Inner Cup was a L68110 but the bearing was still a L68149. The other axles had the L68111 part number. How much difference is there between the L68110 and L68111? Cordell |

I know someone who popped a hub on a triple after a hard turn. My dual scares me at times seeing the tires damn near roll off the wheels. When I'm cranked sharp enough to see the rim itself tilting in or out a good deal, those bearings ain't on no picnic in my mind. SOMETHING is moving.
It's safe to say it isn't good on them. |

You sure the tire tucking under isn't causing an optical illusion? If you are seeng the rim tilting then you have a very loose bearing.
A properly adjusted bearing will only have a minute amount of play, not enough to see while turning or moving. If the bearing is too tight it will overheat. I had one too tight, got real warm. I backed off the adjustment one notch of the cotter pin lock at a time till it ran as cool as the others. |
