In 98/99 ford went to a improved version of the e4od transmission in the automatic trucks called a 4r100. In late 2000 and all the 2001's ford went to a failure prone mechanical diode sprag in 2nd gear. The part failed so much that ford got rid of it and when you rebuild them they have to be retrofitted with earlier style 2nd drum, sprag and a different spline 2nd clutch. Fords aren't as popular around here as gm's but I have repaired at least 15 of them in past 3 years. If trans hasn't been done yet there is a chanch you will experience failure after 80,000 plus miles. Budget in the possibility of a 1800-2500$ trans job. A good customer of mine bought a 2001 w/120,000 miles for a second work truck for his concrete company. He has spent over 8000$ between the trans, front end work, turbo, injector pump and other repairs in 60,000 miles/2 years. He said no more fords but he does haul 8000-13000 lbs and has yo/yo's driving his trucks. I have heard the same from a few of the other customers that I have done transmissions for,Smitty

Ford uses the International 444 motor and calls it the Powerstroke 7.3. Probably the most widely produced, most succesful diesel engine ever produced. The only reason they changed was emissions laws.

My understanding is the motors are the same (99 vs 01) but the bad sprag design makes the 01 transmission MORE failure prone. Ive repaired more 01 transmissions than 99's,Smitty

I have a 2002 7.3 ps, and love it, never a problem towing anything, would not own anything else!
