Trouble with 7.3

I have a 2001 F-350 with the 7.3 and it locked up on me and shot a rod out of the bottom of the oil pan on Christmas day. Apparently at least of the cylinders was full of antifreeze, so we are thinking head gasket or cracked head. It only had 107K miles on it. I have a 6 position chip and usually run it on 100 hp setting around town. I ran it at 140+ setting a couple of times, but it made a bunch of noise so I didnt really use it. Didnt know if the problems could be linked to the chip or not. I have never taken my egt's over 1200 degrees, so I dont know...

Im having a remanned one put in to the tune of $10,000..so that puts a lock down on the finances....dammit!!

Just wondering if anyone else has heard of anything like this...

GO,

I feel your pain.

2002 7.3 w/150,000mi. lost compression on one cylinder (#3) and had to go the Ford Reman route too for right at $10,000 out of pocket + the $800 for them to replace the injector when that's what they thought it was. It wasn't.

The only good news is that your Ford Reman will carry a two year unlimited mileage warranty. I'm now at 225,000+.

I am religious about maintenence too. Coolant flush and fill every 50,000mi, new air filter every 5,000, oil and filter, every 5,000, New fuel filter every 15,000, and on and on...

90% of my miles are freeway or I'd change the oil every 3,000.

Use the coolant additive even though Ford didn't recommend it for those year motors.

Re: Trouble with 7.3

I have a 1996 F350 with the 7.3 powerstroke engine. At 261K miles, I had the passenger side head gasket start to weep antifreeze at the rear of the head. Luckily, it didn't leak in the engine, just down the outside. The truck was totally stock at this time. When I pulled the motor (thought it would be easier pulling the head this way), I sent my injectors out and had them bumped up. Also at this time I changed the downpipe and full exhaust, gutted the EBPV, different intake, put an intercooler in, and installed a DP tuner 4 position chip. The truck has a lot more power than it had stock, and I haven't had any problems at all. I switch the chip from the 100 to 140 settings quite regularly. I now have 294K on it and have just chaulked up my earlier head gasket problem to a fluke thing.

At 107k I would be talking to Ford they my pay for the parts and you pick up the labor, I would ***** at them first. And take the chip out before you take it to them.

Sorry for your luck, that sucks. Matt at TNT, he said he may have a line on a Ford Reman engine for less.

Thanks for the input guys, I went ahead and bit the bullet for another from Ford, I could have gotten one cheaper, but it would have been a risk, plus this one had the 2 year unlimited mileage warranty.
