Options" page we see an option for the 4.5 liter V-8 diesel, and the option price for this is shown as a mere $2,500. The 4.5 liter diesel engine is said to have 300+ horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque and get 3-5 miles per gallon better fuel economy on average compared to the 5.4 liter gas engine.

Re: Expedition Diesel Info?

The 4.5 diesel is actually a 6.0 Powerstroke with 2 cylinders lopped off, they have been running in city delivery vans for about 2 years now... if you liked the 6.0 Excursion, then a 4.5LE Expedition might be in your future.. I am not certain on the 300hp rating, I heard it was around 255-260, and tq was about 450 or so... actually a 4.5 with a VVG turbo might be a runner in an F150 CC...

I work at a dealer. We have been asking about 1/2 ton diesels for years from ford with various answers. I beleive it is coming however they have had a pretty serious setback. They basicallly fired International from the project. International designs and builds their Powerstroke engines. The problem is weight. The engines are just too damn heavy for a 1/2 ton chassis. The 4.5 that Buizilla is talking about being used in city delivery trucks (LCF ford calls them) is a modified 6.0 with two cylinders lopped off. However that enignes weighs more than 1k lbs. It was not the same 4.5 liter 6cyl Ddiesel Ford was working on with International. That one was mostly aluminum and had serous cost and longevity issues according to the Diesel Engineers I talked to.

I've been bugging my dealer asking about the rumored and sometimes announced via car mags Expedition diesel for years. Love the Excursion except when I'm in cities like Seattle/Van or LA, parking is a beach! I'll buy one if and when they become available........

Chrysler had a diesel Jeep Liberty two years ago but cleaner epa regs killed it. Daimler is leading the European charge with the CDI/ Bluetec clean diesels.

The Mercedes GL comes in a diesel as well as the ML and R Wagon. The GL is AWD, weighs 6K lbs, can tow 7500 lbs and seats seven. City is 20/ Highway is 25. As a bonus it is real quiet and you will have to argue with people it is really a diesel.
