Long Term Trailer Plates

I was talking to someone last night who was telling me that you can get license plates for your trailer from maine for like 5 years or more at a time for very little money and you don't need to be a maine resident. He has a bunch of trailers licensed through there and says its totally legit. Also said a lot of semi trailers are registered through maine for that reason as well.

He was explaining that you get the tags from some organization called "STABB" or something. I looked it up online and can't find any info. Anyone have any experience with this?

Re: Long Term Trailer Plates

In VA we can buy "Permanent Trailer" tags. The cost is equal to about 2 1/2 years of regular annual plates. There is no refund if you sell early....which is no big deal. Tags cost about $50.00. Personal property taxes, etc. still apply.

Do you have to be a VA resident? I was told that for the maine tags, you don't have to live there. I haven't verified any of this yet though.

Don't know....Couple months ago I tried to get my truck registered/plated in Delaware but found out I needed a DL license......but needed proof of residence to get the DL license. :(

Not sure about the Maine thing. Here is their website:

The Maine thing is true, I have quite a few friends that are doing it. I think it's $60 for 5 years. Not sure on the legality of it....but they all have had them for 2-3 years without any incidents.

I had the permanent Virginia trailer tag (for $52) until this year when I moved to Maryland. Now I'm getting RAPED to the tune of $248 every two years for tags. I'll be switching over to Maine tags when they expire. I use my trailer twice a year!!!

Codered 02-09-2007 02:55 PM

What about having to have the trailer inspected. This sounds like a good deal though

I'll see them tonight and ask that question. I'll let you know all of the details tomorrow.

Shore Thing 02-09-2007 03:25 PM

The guy who told me about this said that an inspection wasn't required. Just the green dealers certificate and bill of sale if under 3k lbs. or title and bill of sale if it is over 3k lbs.

I still can't locate any info on "STABB". He couldn't remember if that was exactly the name of the organization or not though. I don't think you can go through the standard DMV if you aren't a resident.

Audiofn 02-09-2007 03:40 PM

Yes you can do it. I have a place in Maine but never give them my Maine address at the town hall.

Maine does not instpect trailers.

You need a bill of sale (easy) or title depending on the age of the trailer. Old registration in your name saves you sales tax....

Craig when you need to do that let me or Biggus know and I am sure that one of us can help ya out.

That being said just because you can do it does not make it legal. You are committing tax evasion.

To be honest. For me its not about the money. i'd be happy to pay MD's 5% sales tax on it. I'm trying to commit Maryland DMV evasion.

I went in there, sat in line for an hour and half to get up to the woman and tell her i wanted to title my trailer and get tags. She asked for the title and i told her that it was never registered by the previous owner, but presented her with the green dealers certificate and my bill of sale. She told me "No title, no tags".

I explained my case to her again. She repeated, now in a raised voice, "You're not getting tags until you show me a title!" I asked for a manager and she told me I needed to "get out of her DMV and come back when i had a title." I finally got a hold of a manager, explained the situation and she told me pretty much the same thing and seemed highly annoyed that i would bother her with such an issue. (mind you, I was completely polite up until this point and in shock of how i was being treated. People around me also had their jaws dropped over the situation.) finally I told them "f*ck this place, i just won't use plates."

Now i've calmed down and realize that i need to get plates, but i'm done with those 10th grade education yocals at the DMV.

Hence the interest in Maine plates.

Audiofn 02-09-2007 04:14 PM

It is easy up this way. Took me about 15 min to get my snowmobile registration and pay for my home taxes last saturday. You will have ZERO issues with doing it. My brother had a Camero that he did not have a title for. He paid a company like that after I had told him a bunch of times that I would do it in Maine. When he got the plates from the comapany he paid.... you guessed it Maine Plates.

Shore Thing 02-09-2007 04:39 PM

Its not the one my friend was talking about. But it sounds very similar. I think i'm going to try this route.

Here's a link for anyone else with similar issues.

If you have a bill of sale from the original owner the trailer manufacturer should be able to issue you a certificate of origin. If not you may have to go the home made route. They will issue you a serial plate as long as it has been MD inspected. Granted this way is a PITA if the boat is on the trailer.

Ted G 02-09-2007 11:42 PM

You can also get a "homemade" registration and title from MD. There is an application and you need a pic of it and likely it needs to be inspected, then they issue you a title and a vin number.

Viper31 02-10-2007 07:18 AM

Found this form and it looks like what you need. http://www.marylandmva.com/Resources/VR-008.pdf
Did you see this when you went to DMV?

Viper31 02-10-2007 07:42 AM

I think the first form I posted is not correct but check out this link http://www.marylandmva.com/AboutMVA/...memade_trailer

Also I would see if any of the title agents in your county can help instead of dealing with the bad attitudes at the DMV office. http://www.marylandmva.com/VehicleSe...itleagents.htm

Shore Thing 02-10-2007 10:36 AM

That looks to be for a homemade trailer though. I'm not sure they'd go for it since its obviously built by a manufacturer.

packinair 02-10-2007 04:15 PM

michigan is $75 and never expires

Help me understand what a "Green dealer certificate" is. As far I as I know there are only two identifying pieces of paperwork for trailers. A "Certificate of Origin" which is given to the owner by the trailer manufacturer when it is new or a Title that issued by states that require them.

Many years ago I bought a motorcycle trailer in CA to haul my dirt bikes back east that had no title. When I went to register in MD I had to register it as home made even though I did not build it myself.

Shore Thing 02-11-2007 10:16 AM

Its basically an official bill of sale from the dealer. It looks just like a title though and can be signed over like a title. I have mine in my filing cabinet a work, so i'll pull it out monday and give you more details on it. i haven't looked at it in a long time.

Bought a used boat with a used trailer. Registered the trailer with Virginia DMV and decided I'd go ahead and get the "permanent" tags for $125.00 plus other fees. Three weeks later the used trailer spit out it's hub bearings and became very expensive to fix. So I bought a new trailer and found out that I was SOL on any pro-rating or refund on new tags. Lesson Learned: Buy 1 year tags until you're sure your trailer is going to last a few years.

One year registration is $48. Permanent is $78. I'll take my chances.

Maine Registration. Register any trailer from any state. Easy to do, 100% legal. Up to 12 years for around $206.00. End of story. Registration available from 1-12 years. 1 year=$27.00.

That's pretty awesome. I keep my (6) trailers in top shape, but I hate having to drag each of them in for a stinking trailer inspection (sticker) every year. I may look into this. Do they do vanity plates for trailers like they do here in VA?

Brian - man up and quit worrying about inspections:evilb::evilb:. Hardly any of my stuff is inspected. I don't need someone who knows less about cars than me telling me whether my brake pads work or whether my brake light is out. It's a ****ing revenue scheme....

Trailer - expired in 09
Truck - expired in 5/11
Motorcycle - expired in 08
RX-7 - expired June 06.

No. They send you a plate that expires in what ever year you pay up to: ie a 5 year plate expires in 2016 and it is stamped into the metal plate, Month and year. So no worry about stickers. They also send 2 copies of the registration, one to keep in vehicle and one to keep elsewhere.

Just easier to do instead of the inspection hassels and the renewal fee's. Its $250.00 every 2 years in Md for my 20,000lb trailer. Do the Maine tags and safe alot of $$$$$.

Next time your out on 95, look around at all the the semi trailers. 80% of them will have Maine Tags.
