electric only brakes on a boat trailer??
was talking to a local trailer man. outfit about a new trailer.......started talking about brakes.......he said they offered elect or surge your choice, no difference in price...... I said "you mean electric over hydraulic" he said "no, straight electric, elect over hydr is more".......he said straight elect is fine on a boat trailer......Ive always thought you wouldnt put straight elect on a boat trailer cause of the dunking......he was the "junior" guy at the shop, the real guy wasnt in.......am i behind the times???.......it will be fresh water only up here............doug

I've heard straight electric is OK also. I am researching a little more. Any one else have opinion.
Electric brakes do get wet on a normal trailer also. I am currently having a gooseneck built, so I need a surge alternative, and I heard electric over hydralic is junk. |
I have straight electric and haven't had a problem. Works great with the brake controller.
The only problem is - if you have another truck towing your boat, you need to make sure they have an electric brake controller. |
Had straight electric on the old boat trailer, only downside is the drum part, other than that they worked great. I would turn off the brakes before putting the boat in the water. The new trailer has disc brakes, electric over hydro, thats what it came with when I got it.

If you go electric, make sure to get a flush setup. Then you can hook up to the hose and keep them clean. Not a bad idea for any brake setup.

Looked at a boat two weeks ago with this setup. He said they worked great with no problems for over two years now. I wondered the same thing.

The hydralic wheel cylinders supposedly have the same opportunity for corrosion as the electrics. Surge brakes on a tongue pull trailer are more convenient though in my opinion. I am going with electric on my new goose neck though.

I just upgraded my electric brake set up to elect. over hydralic because the magnets would not make contact with the drum surface and corrosion would affect the contact point of the magnet. It gets rather exciting when you touch the brake pedal and the controller indicates no contact. I pull my boat and trailer which weights in around 16000 lbs with a 5500 series Kodiak so the truck had the weight and brakes to handle stopping with out the trailer brakes but it scared me to the upgrade. I only boat in fresh water so salt was not the culprit. The upgrade was almost $2000 and I did it myself but for the piece of mind is well worth the expense. Myco made the kit and was really straight forward and carlyle made the electric pump. The axles are 10000 lb. capacity each and are a dual/dually set up. Hope this helps. Doug
