If you want to use a synthetic use Syn-Tran by Castol.You will feel the difference over Dextron 111

the name Dexron means is is GM approved;

DEXRONŽ -III
This is a specification for General Motors vehicles, but many foreign manufactures specify a DEXRON approved ATF as well. DEXRON-III can be used in transmissions that call for DEXRON-IIE or DEXRON-II.

Trans-Syn D. Proprietary Castrol for Allison product. Only available at Allison shops. I just happen to have one right around the corner. :cool: The 5 gallon pail is the way to go

Spin-on Alli filters $7.85 there too.

You won't "feel" a difference with Tran-Syn D but your tranny will. :)

other than that yup, Dex III

Changed my trans fluid for the first time not too long ago and have started using Amsoil. My Dad is a distributor, so I can buy it at cost and I think it is a good product. We shall see. I'm putting 8-10k miles a month on my '05 Allison, pulling a 40' flatbed and loads up to 15k lbs., so I'm hoping it performs as advertised.:cool:

do I mix that with anything?

I heard...that you were not supposed to switch to anything....I had a stage 5 hop up.. heavy 5 pack sun convertor plus I just put a extra gear...6th.. and all kinds of tricked out stuff....and they did not say anything about this other stuff...hmmmm...plus....you are not supposed to change any oils from what you have been using from the start I thought..????...also when you take the pan down...get the magnet out and put it on the bottom of the filter....or get another magnet...you will see if they got it in that year...looks like a 2 inch washer....

Byrdman 03-10-2007 08:35 PM

lots of guys are using trans syd on www.dieselplace.com allison oem trans section and somebody said to go to the allison web sight.....but there are a ton of guys using it....also it seems to cost 155.00 to 200. for 5 gallons...and they say the way to flush is do it through the return line disconnect method....they say you do not have to drop the pan and do the filter unless 25g miles...or rebuild....at the rate I change my fluid...i think I will keep the dextron....also they said the dex 3 is being discontinued soon....and going to dex VI...

mikes280 03-11-2007 06:05 PM

look in your book i think it calls for dex-5 not three and when i did mine they said the 3 was to heavy

I will second the Torque-Drive from AMSOIL. Synthetic fluid that mirrors the Trans-Synd for less $$$.

Rippem 03-13-2007 07:11 PM

yes, the torque-drive is popularly accepted by Allison owners also
