First of all it's Cummins there is no G.:p
Yes the 5.9 diesel will get better fuel economy than the hemi, yes it will tow ten times better than any hemi ever will. I have owned both, trust me on this, the diesel is well worth the money over the gasser. As far as economy, much will depend on your driving style. If I keep my RPMs at 2000 and under, unloaded, I can get upwards of 17-18 mpg with the cummins on the highway. My old Hemi 2500 would be lucky to see 15. Around town in the Cummins, I average 12-13 but my commute has quite a bit of traffic lights and stop and go traffic. My figures are hand calculated on my 2006 3500 Quad Cab 4x4 dually. I got better on my old 2500 Cummins but it did not weigh as much or have six wheels. If you are looking at the new 6.7 diesel, I am not sure there is enough info out there, but the fuel economy has not been as good as on the older 5.9s. |
I just sold my 06 cc lb 4x4 5.9cummins auto dodge 2500. with my small edge box set on 70hp I would get around 21mpg on the highway. around town lots of stop go i would dip to 13-14mpg. With my trailer loaded up 12500 running the highway it would dip to 9-12 depending on speed(usually around 75). hope this help

I just drove my Dad's 04 2500 5.9 cummins 4X4 to pick up a boat in Ohio to see how it would do on mileage and it got 21.5MPG driving up there and about 12.5 MPG coming back towing. The boat I was towing was a 22' center console with a large T-top so there is a lot of drag. I was also towing it back through the mountains of West Virginia and Virginia. It towed GREAT!!!

I commonly see 20mpg on my commute to work about 72 mph at about 1950 rpm. I ran 80+ with 1000# in bed for 30 mi and it was reading 19 mpg. been getting around 12 with 8000# boat behind it. Be sure to get 4x4. Im kickin myself for not. 2500 '05 cummins 2wd auto 4 sale
