Auto 4WD
 
'04 Yukon XL, 8.1, 27k miles. Noticed this morning that my transfer case is in neutral, red light between "2wd" and "4hi" is on. When pushing the 2wd button, it just flashes then stops flashing and the red neutral light stays on. Does the same when trying "Auto" button. Truck drives fine, don't notice anything unusual.

Any ideas? Solenoid(s) bad?

Hope it's not related to the horrific GM transfer case thread below. :eek:

Doesn't have anything to do with the gm 263xhd t-cases wearing a hole thru at high miles. Without scanning it my guess would be a bad encoder motor or transfercase control module,your still under warranty I assume so take a trip to your friendly gm dealer,if it wasn't under warranty it would probably be about 500$ to fix it,Smitty

Thanks Smitty. We have a scan tool, check it tonight, Just out of warrenty though, under miles, over time.

Any thoughts on what makes the module or encoder motor go bad? Just unlucky?

It may just be a bad switch assy on the dash, a fairly common problem.

Not really sure why the encoder motors go bad but they have swi\tches,circuits and a gear drive motor that are hanging under neath your vehicle exsposed to temperature changes and moisture/salt etc. The most common part on these 4wd systems to go bad on the full size is the encoder motor,the modules rarely go bad (except on the older auto- trac mini blazers).The cheapest/fastest way to trouble shoot it is if you have a friend or relative who has the same vehicle who will let you switch the parts off theirs one at a time until you find the offending part because the encoder motors are big bucks-(300-400$) and only take 20 minutes to switch,dash switch is the same thing,takes 15 minutes to switch,I think it cost about 60$-80$ for one but if you buy one you own it,Smitty

Started the truck up after work yesterday, problem gone. Has not recurred today.

My GM buddy and I think it may in fact be the module under the dash. As you said Smitty, that problem was prevalent with the older S-10s, but the symptoms are exact. Intermittent problem due to bad contacts. Have not put it on the scanner yet to see the codes. The motor would probably just go bad and not recover in my opinion, so I don't think that's the credible component.

In any event, I may just play dumb since it cleared itself. If it happens again, I'll start attacking it.

If the problem comes back and you narrow it down to the module under the dash get the part# off it and pm me,like I said,I own a brand new one that might be what you need. After serious trouble shooting with my snapon scanner and a voltmeter we narrowed a similar problem down on a 02 or 03 autotrac 2500 non-hd truck (should be same),bought the control module,and it made zero difference. Ended up being the encoder motor like every other fullsize we have ever fixed so I'm stuck with a 400$ t-case control module (couldn't exactly charge the customer for it AND a 400$ plus encoder motor),Smitty

Yup,

mine went bad on the way to Key West a few Years back, going over the 7 mile bridge doing 60, I looked down, and it was in 4WD:eek: not really, but that was what the indicator said
